Students exit the buses in front of Dillsburg Elementary School on Tuesday morning. They are greeted at the door by their principal Dr. Patricia Franko and teachers.
____The first three days of classes for Northern York County School District were a smooth start to the new school year.
Superintendent Eric Eshbach said that the student population totals are holding steady. As for faculty, there are 15 new teachers, plus long-term substitutes working at various schools in the district.
____“Probably the biggest change that people are going to see is the new security system we have in place at each of the schools,” Eshbach said. “It is called the School Gate Guardian, which requires that all visitors to the school present their driver's license or other state ID, which are scanned and the system does a background check against the Meagan's Law records.”
____The national database contains up-to-date files on all registered sex offenders. If it identifies a sex offender, the system automatically alerts the security personnel at the district.
____“It also features frequent visitor's key cards to be issued to parents and volunteers who come often to the schools,” Eshbach said. “That card then can be scanned in. The system also provides us with an electronic record of all visitors to the school.”

Vintage World War II motorcycles line North Baltimore Street in front of Dill’s Tavern on Saturday during the tribute to veterans.
____The Dill's Tavern and Plantation took on a different feel as it filled with reenactors and speakers from the WWII era last Saturday during the Northern York County Historical and Preservation Society’s tribute to those who fought in the war and those who sacrified on the homefront.
____Organizer Doug Riley started this event three years ago and it has grown steadily. The core of reenactors is from Riley’s group, the 45th Infantry Division, US Army, but others, including a group of German troop reenactors have joined in.
____The sounds of gunshot rang out as the two units clashed on the grounds twice during the day. Visitors were kept a safe distance to watch the tactical maneuver that included blanks fired from authentic weapons of the 1940’s.
____German Troop reenactor, Joe Weidle of Lancaster, said he started out as a Civil War reenactor, but finds the German portrayal a lot of fun.
____“The equipment is so different from the U.S. stuff. It’s somewhat exotic,” he said. His German heritage and fondness for the culture is also an attraction. He attends several reenactments a year and travels from Vermont to Virginia.

Pinchot Mooring. En plein air acrylic painting by Dillsburg artist Larry Lerew on canvas using a credit card.
____ Artist Larry Lerew of Dillsburg is making recycled materials useful in creating his loose and expressive art.
____ As a full-time artist since 1978, and noted for his edgy en plein air sketches and studio paintings, Lerew often can be found working outdoors with a simple cut-up credit card making marks over and into his watercolor, acrylic or mixed media sketches. ____
____ An old plastic credit card is a very versatile tool and can produce a wide range of interesting marks using nimble fingers and full arm movements while standing freely at an easel. He has the freedom to quickly use the card as a pen, brush or palette knife to pull or push a line, stamp, flick, or scrape a texture and not even skip a beat. His style of sketching is a real crowd pleaser and has won him many People’s Choice Awards.
____ Lerew says, “Every artist applies pigment to paper or canvas differently, much like handwriting or a written signature. Using a flexible plastic cut-up credit card to sketch or paint can produce a distinct look or magic for each artist who tries it.”
____ Lerew’s latest works may be viewed at www.LarryLerew.com or at his next solo show in the gardens of his studio at 130 Century Lane, Dillsburg on both Saturday and Sunday, September 7 and 8, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (indoors in case of rain).

Junior Devon Hake collides with Northern goalie Haley Mowery during practice.
____ After long hours of practice, the Northern H.S. Field Hockey team is ready to begin a new season this Friday, August 30, when they travel to face Big Spring.
____ While Northern finished 4-12-2 last year, there's a buzz of optimism for a turnaround this year. A core group of returning starters form the foundation: seniors Brooke Sheibley, a Mid Penn All Star midfielder (two goals and three assists last season), Shannon Stutenroth, back, Sharon Kauffman, back and Mid Penn Honorable Mention All Star goalkeeper Haley Mowery (over 200 saves); sophomores Keighly Adams midfield (three assists), Meghan Gallagher, midfield (three goals and five assists), Devon Hake, forward (three goals and four assists).
____ "We have a skilled and determined returning group with their eyes and hearts set on the postseason," said head coach Marcie Boyer. "We have been working hard to improve our goal scoring efficiency, which was a challenging part of our game last fall. Skill consistency, team first attitude, and creating opportunities in the attacking circle are our three main focuses this season."
