Crossroads of Destiny Battle. Confederate soldiers try to swing to the left flank of the Yankee line during the first day of fighting at Gettysburg.
____July 1, 1863, Confederate Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and his cavalry, rode through Dillsburg, traveling south, passing the U.S. Post Office at Dillsburg, Pa., which now houses the office of the Dillsburg Banner.
____That may have been the second time Confederate troops were in the Dillsburg-area, prior to the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863, said local historian, Victor A. Neubaum, a York attorney. The July 1, 1863 incident, however, is the only occasion that can be verified, he said.
____Neubaum became interested in the role that Dillsburg and northern York County residents played in the American Civil War, 1861-1865, more than 20 years ago, which led him to research and report his findings in a book: Our Boys: Northern York County in the Civil War. The book documents the Union army veterans from the area and their part in the war.
____The arrival of Stuart's cavalry in Dillsburg was part of his meandering journey to Gettysburg, which actually started on June 28, when his 5,400 troops crossed the Potomac River. After capturing a wagon train in Rockville, Md., in an effort to gather supplies, as ordered by Gen. Robert E. Lee, commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, Stuart headed north.

____Carroll Township supervisors accepted a bid from Lobar Associates for $49,744 to repair the Junction Road and Old Mill Road bridges. The other bid received was almost double this amount. Township engineer Ryan Rhoades said he had spoken with Lobar to confirm the bid and they assured him they were comfortable with that figure.
____Supervisor Nancy Livingston pointed out that the bid was $50,000 less then they had expected and suggested that the extra could be put toward the Spring Lane Road bridge project. She will look into what kind of action must be taken to accomplish that.
____In other business, supervisors approved the disposal of several years worth of township records including bid information on several projects from 2000 - 2003, payroll and some tax records from 2005 and right to know requests through 2006.

____ Dillsburg Borough Council went into executive session Tuesday night to discuss the police contract with Carroll Township which was hand delivered to the borough offices on Monday, Councilman David Baldwin said Wednesday evening. All councilmen received a copy of the contract Monday evening, he said.
____ Dillsburg Borough denied the police contract at last month’s meeting, stating that the contract had language that was “unacceptable to the borough.”
____ Changes were made to this newer version of the contract, but “we are still reviewing all our options,” Baldwin said, adding that council did not reach a decision at last night’s meeting one way or the other and several discussions may be needed to arrive at the answer.

____ Dr. Joseph Bytof, O.D. is celebrating 30 years at his 7 N. Baltimore Street, Dillsburg, practice.
____ “My office is growing and it’s still a wonder to come in to work every day, see new people, treat new patients, and watch people get better,” he said.
____ Bytof started his office in January 1983 when he took over for Dr. Alvin Levin, who retired early to Arizona. It was initially on a part-time basis.
____ “In the beginning, things were a little more part-time than I thought they would be. It was a bit difficult to get things rolling, but I persevered and here I am 30 years later,” Bytof said.
____ Not only are all those years in business something to marvel at, but so is the story of how he arrived in Dillsburg. Before moving to this area, Bytof completed his education at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Optical Science and later his Optometry Doctor degree. After he graduated and passed his necessary licensing exams, he took a job at an office in Bethlehem. However, he was still living in Philadelphia at that time, resulting in a 50-mile commute each way.

____"I just want to thank all of the coaches, in and out of the dugout, who have been helping every practice," Holford said. "I want to thank the parents for the commitment they've made. It's a big-time commitment. I know this takes away from their summers, but we have a great group of parents that have been allowing their kids to play baseball."

____The best professional advice Dr. Pietropola ever received occurred while he was a senior at dental school. “I was struggling with a patient who would break her teeth and get decay before I had a chance to fix them. I talked to my instructor about the situation, and with his strong West Virginia accent, he said, ‘Lance, you need to realize something. Teeth are not for everyone, and the sooner you learn that, the happier you’re going to be as a dentist.”
____Lance was born at Holy Spirit hospital on December 1, 1977. When he was in second grade, his family moved to Ore Bank Road just outside of Dillsburg. He has fond memories about the house he grew up in. “I have one older brother and one younger brother. One of the things I remember most is running around in the house. We would really carry-on running up and down the stairs,” he said. His mother, Ann was an art teacher at Mechanicsburg for nearly 30 years, and his father, Tony worked for the state for more than 25 years, and for the past 10 years he worked as a consultant in Camp Hill. “My parents established a sense of right and wrong and taught us to make sure everything was done with integrity,” said Lance. “My older brother Tony, Jr. and my younger brother, Dan would hang with crowds that were more mischievous, so I got away with more,” he confessed. “I flew under the radar. My parents were more lenient with me. My dad traveled a lot so my mom got stuck being a disciplinarian, but I did hear her say ‘just wait until your dad gets home.’ Mom definitely had a teacher voice that we did not want to hear.”
