Day of Gratitude
Area veterans are taken to Washington, D.C.

by Honor Buses, escorted by motorcycles

By Curt Werner

Photos by Curt Werner
Over 160 motorcycles and their drivers stage in front of Mechanicsburg Middle School to escort Honor Buses filled with veterans as they prepare to head to Washington D.C. on Saturday morning.

____
Saturday morning was bright and sunny, not a cloud in the sky. A slight chill filled the air.
____ Mechanicsburg Middle School was buzzing as motorcycle after motorcycle turned into the parking lot. Most of the riders wore black leather vests embossed with the American Legion emblem. Many of the cycles flew POW and American flags. There were Legion Riders from Region 7, riders from local VFWs, State police and Latimore Township police and others who just wanted to ride along. When it was all said and done, one hundred and sixty-one motorcycles were on hand.
____ Two blue and white "Honor Buses” were parked on the side of the main entrance to school as spectators started to arrive holding flags. A color guard from Cumberland Valley High School arrived dressed sharply dressed in full uniform including chrome helmets.
____ Forty-eight veterans from WW II and Korean War were having breakfast inside the school as congressman and veteran Scott Perry spoke to veterans. Each veteran had a “Guardian” who would remain with the veteran for the entire day.

The Color Guard from Cumberland Valley High School stands at attention as the WW II and Korean War veterans leave the Mechanicsburg Middle School to board the Honor Buses.

Township to buy new mower- tractor
By Carolyn Hoffman

____Washington Township will purchase a new John Deere mower-tractor at a cost of just over $60,000, to replace one that’s 30 years old. The new tractor will be purchased through the state bid contract that is available to municipalities. Without the contract the price of the tractor and mower would be over $76,000.
____Supervisors indicated the new tractor-mower will come from Stevenson Equipment. Most area municipalities make large equipment purchases through the state contract as the savings are considerable. In this case, the savings will amount to $13,640 on the price of the tractor and $2,660 on the mower attachment.
____In other action at the April 15 session, supervisors opened and awarded bids for road materials and fuel. York Building Products was the low bidder for stone and Hammacker East was the low bidder for asphalt. The township received one bid for tar kettle oil and fuel and awarded the bid to Specialty Emulsions. Edris Oil Service was the lone bidder for diesel fuel and gasoline.
____Supervisors also agreed to require up-front payment of $300 for fees related to the Department of Environmental Protection’s stormwater management requirements. If the costs for a project are less, then the remainder will be returned to the property-owner. If the costs are more, the owner will be charged the full amount. While most new construction in the township so far is expected to cost less than $300 for inspections, total charges for larger projects could be as much as $500.
