Pit orchestra accompanies Northern’s “Hello, Dolly!”
The 2013 Northern High School musical’s pit orchestra, comprised of some of the best student instrumentalists, alongside professional musicians, rehearse with the cast of “Hello, Dolly” earlier this week for this weekend’s performances.
____The pit orchestra for Northern High School’s production of “Hello, Dolly!” is setting new standards with help from area professional musicians, music majors from the nearby Messiah College and music faculty of the Northern York County School District. Under the direction of Jeremy Leidhecker, Northern High School band director, the pit orchestra provides all of the music heard throughout the musical. Some of the best instrumentalists from Northern High School are lending their talents and skills to the pit orchestra, but more than half of the members are professional musicians, many of which are being paid for their services.
____“Most pit orchestra music is not intended to be played by high school students,” said Leidhecker. “The music is incredibly difficult, moves at a quick pace and needs to be performed at a very high caliber in order to elevate the quality of the entire production.” Northern has used students in the past for the pit orchestra, though recently it has prioritized professional musicians for performances.
____“This is most definitely a worthwhile and necessary investment if we want to make each year better than the last,” said Leidhecker.
Nathaniel Curry is airborn in his role as Ambrose Kemper, just one many quirky characters looking for love in “Hello, Dolly.”

Northern's Jonathan Ross lost his first match against Rodney Sunday, of Dallastown, with a score of 5-1 in the 126-pound weight class.
____Last weekend at Hershey Park Arena, four Northern H.S. wrestlers competed in the District 3, Class AAA (South Central Regional) Tournament. Jonathan Ross -- at the 126 pound weight class- went 3-3 on the weekend. He lost his opening round match to Rodney Sunday of Dallastown, 5-1. He then stormed through the wrestle backs, winning 6-2, 9-2, 14-0. This put him into the consolation semis where he once again had to face Sunday. A win would punch a ticket to the state tournament. However, Ross lost 5-3 in overtime.
____"He wrestled a much better match, unfortunately did not get the win," said head coach Mark Murphy. " He had a solid freshmen season and by being that close to making states it will hopefully leave him hungry for next year."
____ At 138 pounds, Garek Strouse went 0-2 in his first trip to Districts. He had the toughest draw out of all the Polar Bear wrestlers and did not advance as he lost his first match to Max Good of Cedar Cliff (pin at 3:55).
Northern's Andy Reed won his first match against Jackson Pettis, of Cedar Cliff, with a score of 3-1 in overtime in the 160-pound weight class.
