Two injured in fire at excavating company

Cement block structure destroyed
By Jeffrey B. Roth

____An unidentified Franklintown Community Fire Company firefighter and an unidentified employee of R.L. Livingston Excavating & Paving, were injured Thursday, Jan. 31 in a fire at the company, located off of the Old York Road in Carroll Township.
____Fire Chief Michael Whitzel said firefighters arrived at the scene about 3:40 p.m. and encountered smoke and flames issuing from the single-story cement block structure. Smoke could be seen from about one mile away, he added. The driveway leading to the company was located in the 100 block of Blair Mountain Road.
____“We heard some explosions,” said Whitzel. “There was a lot of smoke and fire coming up through the roof and blowing toward a barn.”
____The barn was located about 16 feet from the block building. A house was also located on the property. About 50-75 firefighters from York, Cumberland and Adams counties managed to contain the fire to the block building, he said.

Firefighters first on the scene, Wilbur Stough and Tom Lucas (black helmet), Franklintown Fire Company, roll out the 5” hose to get closer to the flames during last Thursday’s two-alarm fire in Carroll Township.

Carroll Twp. bridge repair cost could jump to almost $1 million
By Peggie Williams

Spring Lane Road bridge was closed last spring because officials deemed it unsafe. Estimates for the replacement today could reach close to a million dollars.

____
Estimates for the replacement of the Spring Lane Road bridge have doubled or more since the last estimate was given almost one year ago, according to a report from engineer Ryan Rhoades at a Carroll Township supervisors workshop meeting Feb. 4. Although former engineer Steve Barber had always said his estimates were very rough and did not include any permitting, supervisors were still surprised.
____ The last estimate for the bridge replacement was around $400,000. The new estimate was $700,000 if only one abutment is replaced and up to $960,000 if both are replaced. Rhoades stressed that replacing both abutments would be the better repair and allow more flexibility if further problems were encountered as the plan moved along. He also assured supervisors that at this early stage of estimating, the estimates are always high to cover contingencies. He also said this estimate was based on standard bridge construction methods, but he was still looking into alternatives.
____ There are several options available to cover the cost of the repairs, which include a loan from the Public Infrastructure Bank or simply continuing to save up tax dollars over the course of years. The matter was tabled until another meeting.

Dollar General is on track
By Carolyn Hoffman

____
Wellsville’s new Dollar General store appears to be on track and moving ahead, according to Council President Darryl Boyd at the Feb. 4 borough council session.
____ Final settlement on the property is set for next week. Required state permits to remove the gas tanks are underway and appear to be proceeding normally. Miller Brothers Construction Development, a Schuylkill Haven firm, will retain ownership of the former Lynn’s Market and Sunrise Discount store. They are expected to start work on the exterior of the building in mid-February.
____ Dollar General will handle renovations to the interior. Boyd said he did not know the precise length of the lease with Dollar General but thought it was in the range of 10 years. He also said the Methodist Mission Central, a faith-based group based in Mechanicsburg, will be getting at least some of the shelving and similar materials that are currently inside the building.
____ In other action at the session, council got a first look at a new site plan for Weaver’s of Wellsville, the smoked meat production facility located on Chestnut Street. Weaver’s plans to expand its coolers and construct a mechanical building.
