Dillsburg library's living history program
A glimpse into Civil War-era Christmas

By Erica Smithson

Myra Reichart toils at her needle point, in period piece perfection, while her husband, Paul, reads her a letter.

____The Dillsburg Area Public Library will sponsor a Civil War-era Christmas program called “Ought It Not To Be a Merry Christmas?” on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. at the historic Monaghan Church, located on Church Street in Dillsburg. Admission to this event is free.
____The program will be presented by Myra Reichart, who has provided historical interpretations through her Gettysburg-based business, Places Through Time Living History, Inc., for more than 15 years. Throughout her presentation, Reichart will touch upon holiday customs and traditions that started during the Civil War, many of which are still enjoyed today. But the hallmark of the event will be the reading of first-hand accounts of soldiers, battlefield nurses and others affected by the war, which Reichart has drawn from their letters and journal entries. Reichart complements her interpretation by creating a period-perfect persona and wearing historically accurate clothing — from the outer dress down to the underpinnings — all so the audience feels as if they have been transported back to the 19th century.
____Barbara Tosiano, Dillsburg Library’s director, said the library was interested in putting on this program in part because the Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg will have its 150th anniversary in July. There is a lot of interest in local history of that time period. As such, the library wanted to reach out to the community to bring them an educational and unique look at the holiday season. They chose to hold the program at Monaghan Church because of its historical nature and because it will be decorated for Christmas. In the spirit of this being a local event, refreshments will also be provided by Dillsburg’s Sweet Things Bakery.

Civil suit against 2 Adams County police officers settled out of court

By Jeffrey B. Roth

____
A federal civil suit filed by a York Springs family against two Adams County-area police officers has been settled out of court.
____Attorney Bart W. Holmes, of Owens Barcavage & McInroy in Harrisburg, filed the suit in U.S. Middle District Court of Pennsylvania in April 2011, on behalf of Lewis and Maryann Speese, and their son, John Speese, against Latimore Township Police Officer Todd Forney and Reading Township Police Officer Eric Beyer. The elderly couple and their son alleged that police conducted an illegal search of their home and used excessive force against members of the family.
____On March 21, 2009, the couple was holding a birthday party for their granddaughter at their home, on Brough Road in York Springs. Sometime after the party ended, Forney arrived at their residence in a patrol car.
____John Speese went outside to talk with Forney in the front yard. The police officer told John he had received a report that John was suicidal and was also told drugs were on the property. When John asked the officer if he appeared suicidal, Forney “admitted he did not.”

The start of the fourth annual memorial 5K run/walk honoring the lives of Jon Quigley and Emily Trump.

____The fourth annual memorial 5K run/walk to honor the lives of Jon Quigley and Emily Trump was held Saturday, Nov. 24, at Mechanicsburg Middle School.
____Both Quigley and Trump graduated from Mechanicsburg High School and completed their freshman year at Penn State University. A tragic car accident on June 6, 2009, ended promising careers for both.
____When the horn sounded to start the race, more than 200 runners and walkers braved the chilly weather and wind. Many waited until the last second to leave the middle school building to keep warm.
____The first runner to cross the finish line was Stew Conrad, of Willow Grove, with a time of 17 minutes and 31 seconds. A pleasant surprise finisher, 12-year-old Morgan Cupp, of Mechanicsburg, finished with a time of 18 minutes and 12 seconds. The first female runner to cross the line was Terrie Evans, of Mechanicsburg, with a time of 21 minutes and 12 seconds.

Alie Smith, a senior at Big Spring High School, and Taylor Hallowell, of Hershey, cross the finish line hand in hand. They became friends while running the course.
“We would have finished sooner, but we made a wrong turn,” said Smith.

Step up for Polar Bears

By Joe Guty

The boys' varsity and JV basketball teams perform jumping drills.

____A new season is around the corner and one notable change for the 2012-13 Northern Boys' Basketball team is a step up to Class AAAA. The Polar Bears will join the Mid Penn Conference Capital Division that will feature a mix of schools classification-wise: Camp Hill (AA), East Pennsboro (AAA), Middletown (AAA), Milton Hershey (AAA), Steelton-Highspire (AAA), Susquenita (AA) and West Perry (AAA).
____The implications of Northern as a Class AAAA school are that by playing AA and AAA schools, the opportunity for a higher power ranking is reduced. Regardless, head coach Ron McDonald will look for returning starters and returners to pace the Bears' team that will feature ball control and quickness.
____"With the change to the Capital Division, a bump up to AAAA, and an upgraded schedule, it will be a tested season but expectations are to be competitive and have a winning record," said coach McDonald.
