WWII Jeeps and equipment line N. Baltimore Street in front of Dill’s Tavern Aug. 18 during a tribute held to honor area veterans.
____The sounds of gunshot rung out in Dillsburg as WWII re-enactors from the U.S. Army's 45th Infantry Division fought their way to a small contingent of German scouts holed up in the wheelwright’s shop on the grounds of Dill's Tavern Saturday, Aug. 25
____It was all a part of the second annual WWII tribute sponsored by Northern York County Historical and Preservation Society. Visitors to Dill's Tavern that day were kept a safe distance to watch the tactical maneuver that included blanks fired from authentic weapons of the 1940s.
____Visitors also had the chance to meet several local veterans and hear their story. Among them were Walter Mattson, a pilot and Madeline Schmid, a Navy WAVE who spoke to the crowd.
____Herb Bomberger and Connie Trostle led a discussion of how the war was handled on the home front. Members of the audience shared their experiences. The conversations were recorded to become a part of NYCHAPS’ oral history files.

Dollar General:
Pull the plans
By Carolyn Hoffman
____Representatives from Dollar General have notified Wellsville borough to “”Pull the plans. Thanks” when they were asked to update the borough on the status of the project. Those four words were the entirety of the email sent to borough officials on August 29.
____The email appears to put an end to the project planned for the field next to Doe Run. In late June, the borough’s engineer discovered the borough’s little-used flood plain management ordinance forbid new construction or development within 50 feet of the top of a bank of any watercourse. The plan proposed by Dollar General at that time showed construction of a stormwater basin and an access crossing within about 20-25 feet of Doe Run.
____After that session, the planning commission tabled the plan and gave the developers 30 days to respond to the engineer’s findings and let them know what their intentions about going forward would be. A month later, the representatives reported they were “redesigning the site to meet the flood plain ordinance.” Now, based on this email, the project appears to be over.

Food Drive exceeds expectations
By Carl Nell
____A food drive was held Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Wolgemuth Church of the Brethren on Old York Road in Dillsburg. Pastor Douglas Miller said the church wants to become more focused on outreach and more involved in the community, so members held a food drive to benefit New Hope Ministries, which has facilities in Dillsburg. The church’s goal was to fill the bed of a Chevy S-10 pickup truck. Not only did generous donors fill that truck, but they also filled a mini-van.
____The event began at 10:30 a.m. with the morning worship service, during which Gina Staton, community liaison for New Hope Ministries, was invited to share the mission of the organization and talk about how the group is helping the needy in the Dillsburg and Wellsville areas. She said New Hope receives assistance from many churches and that the small churches are “so gracious, so kind and so willing to give.” The need for New Hope’s services has grown by 40 percent in the last year alone, according to Stanton, with the majority of those people classified as “working poor.”
____New Hope provides supplemental groceries and helps with medical bills, rent, car repair and other expenses. Staton said New Hope is quick to provide assistance to those in need, but clients must attend a financial literacy class, which lasts about 90 minutes. The organization also provides employment-related services such as job searches and help preparing resumes and completing applications.

___ And there is an outside chance by Friday, feet might get wet --and muddy--- as Tropical Storm Isaac barrels through the Gulf and northward.
