Jamie Gray, a two-time Olympian and 2012 gold medalist, shoots at the flying clay targets at Central Penn Sporting Clays in Wellsville.
____On Saturday morning, August 18, Central Penn Sporting Clays hosted a very special guest at their facility near Wellsville - Jamie Gray, a two-time Olympian and current gold medalist in the women’s 50-meter three-position rifle event recently held at the London Olympics. She was invited by Tom Zerbe of the Zerbe Hunt Club in Potter County to shoot in a sporting clays event at the club on Quarry Road in Warrington Township. Zerbe met Jamie recently when she was invited to attend a meeting of the Safari Club International (Blue Mountain Chapter) to become an honorary member. Nearly 80 people competed in the shoot, which lasted until late afternoon.
____The clays course involves shooting from different stations at clay birds that are thrown in varying degrees of elevation and overlapping patterns. Jamie was excited to attend this event with her Army marksmanship husband, Staff Sgt. Hank Gray. Her roommate at the Olympic Athletes Village was Kim Rhode, who won a gold medal in the women’s skeet shooting event.
____A native of Lebanon, Pa., Jamie has been actively shooting since she was 8 years old, when her father introduced her to BB gun competition. By the time she was 15, she was competing on an international level, earning medals as early as 2002. She attended the University of Alaska at Fairbanks because it had a good rifle team. At the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, Gray placed fifth in the three-position rifle after losing her chance to medal on the very last shot of the competition. Then, after competing in the World Cup matches of 2010 and 2011, she qualified to compete with the U. S. Olympic team again in the 2012 London games.

New Dillsburg bakery is something to buzz about
By Erica Smithson
____The Sugar Buzz Bakery, located at 200 N. Second St. in Dillsburg, has only been open for a few weeks, but with its offerings of gourmet cakes, cupcakes, pies, cookies and other baked goods, it's already got local foodies on something of a sugar high.
____Owners Pam Trout and Brina Peifer have been building up their storefront for the past three weeks, but they have been baking together since February. Trout says she loves the bakeries in the New York area, where her father is from and many of her relatives live. She wanted central Pennsylvania to have a similar type bakery. Trout herself is from the Harrisburg area and her husband is from Dover. She liked Dillsburg because it was about halfway between the two cities. Peifer is also from Dover.
____Trout has spent her career as a project designer for local architectural firms and has even designed for local theaters. However, she took a cake decorating class a few years ago and said she “absolutely loved it.” Peifer is a family and consumer sciences teacher in the Dover school system. Baking and cooking are not only a part of her job, but a favorite pastime, as well.

Dillsburg man to compete in Kipona chili cook-off
By Erica Smithson
____Nate Graham, a resident of Dillsburg and owner of G&G Auto, will compete in the Keystone Regional Chili Cook-off in Harrisburg’s Riverfront Park as part of its Labor Day Kipona Festival on Saturday, Sept. 1.
Graham cooks with a group of friends and the assistance of volunteers under the name Trailer Trash Chili. ____He has competed at the Keystone Regional cook-off since 2002 and has won the “People’s Choice” award for crowd-favorite chili for the past two years, upsetting the Swamp Rats team, who had won that title for years previously. He is hoping to win that title again this year. He also wants to win the grand prize of $750, which would qualify him to cook in the International Chili Society’s World Championship Cook-off to be held Oct. 5-7 in Charleston, W. Va.
____Graham says he began cooking chili after high school when he had to “fend for himself” as far as cooking was concerned. He created a recipe and cooked it often, saying that because the ingredients were relatively inexpensive and it made a good quantity per batch, it was an economical dish for his limited budget that would sometimes last him all week.

2012 Northern York Fastpitch Association players.
___ This summer was the first year that young softball players in the Dillsburg area had a chance to play organized fast pitch softball. What started out as a dream turned into reality as over ninety girls signed up to play.
___ The league is called the “Northern York Fastpitch Association.” The league consisted of over 1500 girls ages five to eighteen with teams from Dover, Windsor, Stewartstown, Hellam, Spring Grove, York Township, Red Lion, Gettysburg and East York. Dillsburg was able to field teams to include five to fourteen year olds which became the third largest group to participate.
___ “The goal of the NYFA is to feed the High School with qualified players,” said Andy Slothower, vice president of marketing. “Along the way the young players learn the game with sportsmanship, discipline and teamwork. This year I was blown away with how the season progressed,” Slothower said. The under twelve year old B team finished in second place in the YCJGSL playoffs ending the season with a record of 15-1.
