____How well do you know your neighbors? Do you feel like you belong in your neighborhood? The residents of Carroll Township, Monaghan Township and Dillsburg Borough can answer both of these questions better after many of them participated in the fifth annual National Night Out program presented by the Carroll Township Police Department. The local event was held Tuesday, Aug. 7, 5-9 p.m., at Logan Park in Dillsburg.
____Sgt. David Smith, with the Carroll Township Police Department, was in charge of organizing the event. He estimated about 2,500 people came to the park for a night of food, children’s games, informational presentations by Dillsburg-area businesses, support for first-responders such as police and firefighters and, most importantly, spending time with their neighbors.
____Smith said National Night Out, a national program now in its 29th year, is a crime prevention tool. It began with homeowners in participating neighborhoods leaving their porch lights on as a symbol of neighbors helping neighbors and taking a stand in the fight against crime. According to the National Night Out program’s website, nationaltownwatch.org, about 15,000 communities across the United States and Canada participate in National Night Out activities every year.

Zumba program turns hometown classes into fitness parties
By Erica Smithson

Instructor Tara Haller, center back, stands with her group of Zumba dancers at the Wellsville Fire Company.

___ It seems like Zumba, the Latin music-based dance fitness program, is everywhere these days. Every gym, church or fire hall you pass has signs advertising their weekly classes. However, Zumba is not just some passing fad. The program has been going strong since 2001, and according to its website, Zumba.com, more than 12 million people have taken classes in more than 110,000 locations in 125 countries. Enthusiasts consider themselves a part of a worldwide dance party.
___ Locally, there is a Zumba instructor whose classes have been popular for more than one year. On June 13, Tara Haller, who holds her class in the Wellsville Fire Hall, celebrated her first anniversary of instruction in the program. Her anniversary party consisted of a normal hour-long class, but attendees were also in the running for door prizes where they could win Zumba gear and, if they wore a specially-designed T-shirt emblazoned with “I Love My Zumba Family,” they were eligible to win a punch card redeemable for 10 free classes.
___ Haller said her class was so popular that within the first month, she had to change venues because it was getting too crowded. Originally, her class was held in the Grace United Methodist Church in Wellsville before she moved to the fire hall, where it remains. The new location not only allows for more space, but also has a raised stage that Haller performs her routines on, giving students easy visibility to her so they can follow along.

____PennDOT advises motorists traveling U.S. Route 15 that on Aug. 3 they will encounter a traffic shift and a single-lane restriction in each direction after 9 p.m. followed by an eight-hour overnight detour starting around 11 p.m. as crews remove the damaged bridge beams and set new beams on the pedestrian bridge over U.S. Route 15.

___ On Wednesday, July 25, the Dillsburg Little League 9- and 10-year-olds team coached by Rob Heisey, Dylan Merovich and Mark Hennessy traveled to York for one of its biggest games: the final game in the long road to a double-elimination tournament for the Clarence Boyd Championship.
___ The four teams that qualified for the tournament were Carlisle, Greencastle, South Hanover and Dillsburg.
___ The journey started on Saturday, July 21, against Carlisle. Dillsburg easily won with a score of 18-4, giving Carlisle their first loss. On Sunday, July 22, Dillsburg played Greencastle, the winner over South Hanover, and won a close game with a score of 4-3. On Tuesday, July 24, Dillsburg again met Carlisle, who had given Greencastle their second loss and eliminated them from play. South Hanover also suffered a second loss earlier by Carlisle. If Dillsburg could defeat Carlisle again they would be the champions. But the day belonged to Carlisle, as Dillsburg suffered their first loss by a score of 6-4, setting up the championship game for Wednesday, July 25, in York.

Doubles, not only in baseball
By Jeff Shultz

Josh Hayes #1 riding Monster Energy Grave Yamaha R1 at speed.

____The very best riders of the American Motorcycle Association paid homage to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on July 13 for the 30th consecutive year. Many experienced riders returned to do battle with their peers, while several challengers entered into each of the four classes of bikes.
____This year would be no exception, with a double-header scheduled for three different classes. Those classes comprised of SuperSport, Daytona Sportbike and Superbike. To complete the weekend schedule, the Pro Vance and Hines XR 1200 Series would add to the excitement.
____Saturday’s SuperSport Race was dominated by Dustin Dominguez on a Triumph 600. A very poor start initially had him in seventh place. But after taking the lead, he didn't have any effective challengers. James Rispoli charged hard and finished a mere two seconds behind Dominguez. The battle for the remaining podium finish raged among Stefano Mesa, Ryan Kerr and Thomas Puerta, with Mesa eventually coming home in third.
