____The Spring Lane Road bridge over Dogwood Run is closed until further notice.
____PennDOT closed the bridge in reaction to a June 11 decision by Carroll Township supervisors to delay a decision on which contractor would do the repairs on the bridge that failed inspection last fall.
____In spite of having opened six bids received for the project, supervisors delayed while they explore other options including replacing the bridge instead of repairing it.
____“We don't want to just put a band aid on it unless we have to,” said Mark McCurdy.
____Township engineer Steve Barber warned supervisors that PennDOT might do this if they dragged their feet.
____Township secretary Faye Romberger said they have known about the decision since Tuesday and the bridge will remain closed until repairs are done.
____A contractor cannot be chosen until the board meets again. The next scheduled meeting is July 9. Romberger said no emergency meetings have been schedule at this time.

____A Dillsburg man was killed late Sunday afternoon in Monaghan Township after he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a building.
____Colby Hamsher, 21, of the first block of Hanover Street, was traveling south on North York Road around 5:29 p.m. near the Siddonsburg Road intersection when his Mercury Cougar veered off the roadway and slammed into a one-room school house, landing upside down in the grass. The wall of the building collapsed, covering Hamsher’s car with bricks. Hamsher was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by the York County Coroner’s office.
____Monaghan and Upper Allen fire companies, fire police and Carroll Township police were on the scene. The school house was unoccupied and being restored.

Residents speak out on behalf of police
By Peggie Williams

____Two dozen people attended the Carroll Township June 11 supervisors meeting to voice concerns regarding a rumor circulating throughout the community that Carroll Township Police would be working without back-up during their shifts in order cut costs.
____Speaking against the move, Scott Derr told supervisors he wanted to hear supervisors’ thoughts publicly, perhaps in a letter to the editor, because he wanted the issue dealt with before it got to a point where “the pitchforks come out.” He said that while he understood the budget concerns facing all municipalities, he felt it was important to keep the police and wanted citizens and the police to find a way to make it work.
____“I want a police force here,” he said, “That’s one of the reasons I chose live in Carroll Township.”

Project permits revoked
By Carolyn Hoffman

____Monaghan Township supervisors voted to revoke all permits for a building project on South Lewisberry Road until discrepancies between the applications and what was found at the site are resolved. The initial application was for a pole barn, but it now appears a residence is being constructed, it was reported at the June 11 meeting.
____The size of the building and the size that was approved on the building permit application do not appear to match. The drawings that accompanied the permit application apparently do not show electrical or mechanical details suitable for a residence. The amount of disturbance on the one-acre lot might also require approval from the county conservation district. A land development plan showing what is on the lot is also needed. Until the issues are resolved and clarified, work will be halted.
____Supervisors were concerned that their own permitting process could have contributed to the discrepancies at the project and so held an executive session after the regular meeting to discuss possible personnel issues surrounding the issue.

The grounds will be also be used for state plowing contests, as well as tractor shows in the spring and fall. Camp sites are now available along the Yellow Breeches Creek.
____“We like to start with 100 camp sites,” said David Bush. “Sites can be rented by the month or by the year and the location is close to Williams Grove Speedway.”

By Jeffrey Roth

Bill Conway takes flight in his "Trike," which has an average speed of 61 miles per hour in flight and can fly for up to four hours using four gallons of gas per hour. The Trike has a two-stroke, 582cc engine.

____Blue skies, a dry turf runway and warm temperatures made Saturday flying weather for more than 90 ultralight aircraft that came to the private, Shrevesport North Airport at the Footlight Ranch for the 23rd annual Father's Day Fly-in, near Wellsville.
____The event attracted hundreds of visitors to the rural airfield that hosted the 25th anniversary of the Mason-Dixon Sport Flyers Club, said Jerry Rosie, club president. The organization is part of the USUA, a national organization that represents ultralight and light sport aviation enthusiasts. Ultralight and microlight are the terms used by the Federal Aviation Administration to designate any vehicle, powered or unpowered single- and two-seat aircraft flown primarily for sport. Ultralight aircraft include fixed-wing, rotorcraft, powered parachutes, hang gliders, para-gliders, sailplanes, balloons and others.
____Pilots from Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and other areas on the East Coast flew or towed their aircraft to the Footlight Ranch for the fly-in that has become a tradition. Rosie said many of the pilots and their families arrived Friday afternoon and evening and stayed for the three-day event. Many brought recreational vehicles and tents to camp on the flight line.
