Late at night, under a full moon, a Northern school bus arrived at the Learning Center with an escort by Citizens' Hose Co. No. 1 fire truck. As it pulled into the parking lot, more than one dozen cars had their four-way flashers going.
When the bus stopped, the crowd applauded and snapped pictures. The Northern Middle School and High School brought back five first-place finishes from Wildwood, N.J.

Northern High School, Middle School color guard and dance
teams take home 5 first-place wins

Paparazzi gone wild. A large crowd snap photos and cheer for the students getting off the bus.

____Congratulations to the Northern High School and Middle School students who swept the Tournament Indoor Association’s Atlantic Coast Championships in all five of their represented divisions in color guard and dance! The teams competed in routines against schools from nine other states May 3-6 in Wildwood, N.J.
____The five represented teams were High School Color Guard and Dance, Middle School Color Guard and Dance and an A-Class Dance team. Their shows varied in themes, from a military tribute to the service men and women (High School Dance team) to a routine expressing the happiness of being able to dance in the rain (the Middle School Color Guard team, titled “Every Time it Rains”). Each team competed against their own division: middle school against middle school, color guard against color guard and so on. They were scored the highest of 100 points to receive the title of champions.
____Northern’s hard-working performers have excelled as champions before. Nanette DeRemer, the director of the dance teams and the color guard teams, and the person who writes the programs and choreography, said that four of the teams have had multiple championships in the past and the A-Class team received their first championship with their first representation in the competition this year. The Middle School Color Guard and Dance teams have each won three previous titles, the High School Color Guard has won five times and the High School Dance team is on their seventh victory this year. The dance teams are also trained in the “World Class” category, which is the highest level of competition.
____DeRemer said the teams begin practicing in late November. They practice anywhere from one to three times each week, depending on age and experience level. They are first trained in the basics of color guard and dance, then they move on to their choreographed routines. These routines begin to take shape in December, when musical pieces are added and instructors give feedback on what should be altered or changed. DeRemer said that her students love performing the routines and being pushed to new, challenging levels.

‘Junkyard’ property fight drags on in Franklintown
By Peggie Williams

____The Franklintown Borough council heard from Jere Harbold, owner of the former Bumper Boys property, and Timothy Rowbottom, Harbold's new tenant. The two came to the May council meeting to answer questions about Rowbottom’s use of the property.
____At last month’s meeting, councilman Marvin Wilson said the council-requested cleanup on the property had stopped and new vehicles and vehicle parts were accumulating. Concerns about the property include possible contamination of the municipal well it is near, rodent/insect infestations and that Rowbottom never obtained a junkyard permit.
____Rowbottom claims the term “junkyard” is a matter of interpretation and that he is only storing parts he uses for his car-rebuilding business, T&T International, where he rebuilds cars. Rowbottom said there should be no fluid leakage because all fluids are removed in Harrisburg, where he strips the cars.
____Council President Dick Blouch said the borough’s hands were tied because they did not have the titles to the vehicles. “We’d just clean it up and send you the bill except for that,” he told Harbold.

Northern music activities reflect ongoing excellence, diversity, community support

Photos by Curt Werner
The Bucket Jam was done with the lights out. The Northern High School Freshman Percussion Ensemble wore white gloves and the drums shined in the dark in a performance directed by Mr. Nebistinsky.

____In the months of April and May 2012, the Northern music program continued a remarkable year of growth, diversity, excellence and achievement.
____The 55th annual Spring Bands Concert was presented on May 1, 2012, in the Northern High School auditorium. The program featured the Freshman Percussion Ensemble in an entertaining and creative visual and acoustic display of tones, movements and rhythms reminiscent of aspects of Blue Man Group performances. Additionally the Touring Percussion Ensemble, Concert Band and Wind Ensemble presented a variety of beautiful works, including a performance by the Wind Ensemble of Percy Aldridge Grainger’s collection of English folk songs entitled “Lincolnshire Posy,” honoring its 75th anniversary this year. The Percussion Ensemble is co-directed by Joseph Nebistinsky and Jeremy Leidhecker, while the Touring Percussion Ensemble is directed by Nebistinsky, Anthony Miranda and Dan DeLong. The Concert Band and Wind Ensemble are directed by Leidhecker.
____A special highlight of the evening was the performance of Eric Whitacre’s “The Seal Lullaby” in tribute to Dr. Linda Lemmon, Northern’s outgoing superintendent. Lemmon, who is retiring this year, has been a long-time supporter of the arts and has advocated keeping music and arts programs alive in an era of budget cuts and program losses. Participation in music and arts programs consistently have been shown to correlate with improved academic, emotional and intellectual development and achievement. Lemmon and the ensemble’s moving performance received a standing ovation.

The Northern High School Concert Band, Freshman Percussion Ensemble and Wind Ensemble hosted their 55th annual spring concert on May 1, in the high school auditorium, featuring 112 instrumentalists.

By Erica Smithson

Sam Mizrahi

____Sam’s Butterfly Run, the annual 5K run and 1-mile fun walk to benefit the Sam Mizrahi Memorial Fund, now in its sixth year, is scheduled to take place at Northern High School on Sunday, May 20. Check-in time is 1 p.m.
____The event’s honoree, Samuel Joseph Mizrahi, was a Northern High School student (class of 2008) who died in June 2006 at age 16 from injuries sustained in an auto accident. His family established the Memorial Fund (a component of the Foundation for Enhancing Communities) in their son’s name. The fund gives a scholarship to a graduating Northern senior to assist with college tuition expenses and also makes a donation to the Harrisburg Diabetic Youth Camp, which Sam attended from the time he was 7. In his years there, he served as both a camper and a counselor.
____Friends and family describe Sam was a larger-than-life personality, 6 feet tall with a huge head of long, curly hair. He enjoyed music, video games, and sports. He earned a black belt in karate and loved to ski. He found interest in the books of Stephen King, sports cars and superheroes. In addition to being a camp counselor, he also served his community by working as a cashier at Giant Food Stores. He wanted to attend college in California to become a successful lawyer.
