Williams Grove Farmers' Flea Market loses part of its vendor area

The flea market area, known as the Park Market and located on the grounds of the former Williams Grove Amusement Park, is now closed. The upper area, known as the Farmers' Flea Market, is still opened. This 90-acre spot has spaces for more than 500 vendors and is owned by the Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association.
____Dillsburg Borough is on its way to building a new community park. At its monthly public meeting on Tu Every Sunday, rain, snow or shine, from dawn until 2 p.m., thousands of customers converge on the Williams Grove Farmers' Flea Market to buy anything from produce to autographed photographs of classic movie and television stars such as Shirley Temple and Roy Rogers.
Tu “If you can't find it up here, you really don't need it,” said Richard Reed, president of the Williams Grove Historical Steam Engine Association. “We have vendors from Berkley Springs, W.Va., various place in Maryland and from Dillsburg, Mechanicsburg, Harrisburg, York, Lancaster and other places in Pennsylvania.”
Tu Last month, Kathleen Hughes, of Philadelphia, the owner of the lower tract of land near the site of the former amusement park, decided to no longer allow vendors on the land, Reed said. Hughes, the daughter of the late Morgan Hughes, who bought Williams Grove Amusement Park and Williams Grove Speedway in 1972, inherited the property from her father in 2008.

Borough receives funds to purchase property

____Dillsburg Borough is on its way to building a new community park. At its monthly public meeting on Tuesday, March 13, the Dillsburg Borough Council approved the development of the park and gave Council President Jeff Griffin the authority to sign all documents involving the development of the proposed Dillsburg Community Park. The park will be located off South Chestnut Street across from the Dillsburg Elementary School.
____At the end of last year, the borough received a $234,800 Community Conservation Partnership Program grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR). According to the council, this grant will cover about half of the cost of building the park. Therefore, the council passed Ordinance 2012-2 to provide financing for the park by permitting the borough to incur a debt in the maximum amount of $260,000. In a roll-call vote of each council member, the ordinance passed unanimously.
____Plans for the park include a community building, a walking trail, playground facilities, a dog park and possibly a community pool.
____Former Council President Mark Ryder asked if the borough got a good interest rate, to which Councilwoman Holly Kelley replied that it did.

Citizens Hose Company No. 1
Fire Company holds 30th Annual Appreciation Banquet

The firefighter of the year award was presented to Hector Morales.
The last award was a surpise to Robert Heffelfinger. He received a plaque with a photo of his dog, Romeo, who passed away last September. The crowd applauded as Heffelfinger placed the plaque on the wall.
____Dillsburg's Citizens Hose Company No. 1 held their 30th annual appreciation banquet on Saturday, March 24, and top local politicians even came out to celebrate.
____The event's guest list included state Sen. Pat Vance (R-Camp Hill), retiring Rep. Todd Platts (R) and state Rep. Scott Perry (R-Dillsburg), who is looking to fill Platts' seat in the U.S. Congress. All thanked the firefighters, EMS and fire police for their countless hours of training and quick response to auto accidents and fires. Vance also said volunteer fire companies in Pennsylvania save taxpayers millions of dollars each year.
____Mayor Hank Snyder swore in the 2012 officers for the fire department, EMS and fire police, while Mark Ryder served as master of ceremonies. Laura Dye showed a slide presentation of the fire department's events during 2011, included responses to fires and auto accidents, as well as appearances at Farmers Fair and local schools.

Essay contest winner chosen

____Amy Kimmel, eighth grader from Dillsburg, placed first in the VFW Lady Auxiliary Patriot Pen Essay Contest in the twenty first district. Kimmel received $350.00 for placing first by the Etters VFW Commander, George Kohler. The topic this year was "Are You Proud of Your Country." The Dillsburg area had seventy five entries from eighth graders.
____Kimmel read her winning essay at the Dillsburg VFW on Sunday, March 11. Mary Kula, Chairperson, said, "This is the first time in many years someone from the local VFW has placed first in the essay contest. We are so proud of Amy."

Bears ready to battle

____In boys ' high school volleyball, Northern will host Central Dauphin East this Thursday, March 29. ____Game time is 7 p.m. The Polar Bears return to the Mid-Penn Keystone Division minus five starters from last year's squad that went 5-11 overall and 5-5 in the league. However, key returnees include senior outside hitter Derek Speese, junior setter Nathaniel Houser, junior outside hitter Randy Violette and senior opposite hitter Phil Williams.
____Head coach Heather Manock returns for her fourth year at the helm and sixth year with the program. Key newcomers for the Polar Bears include Evan Simpson (junior - OPP) and Matt Yohn (sophomore - MH).
____"We graduated five starters last year, but I am looking forward to seeing our younger players step up and take control of some key positions," said Manock. "What we lack in height, we will make up for it defensively and look to make smart offensive decisions."

Bears back on attack

The Northern lacrosse team traveled to Carlisle for the first game of the season. The Bears were defeated 13-4. Evan Werner led the team with two goals, while John Gamber and Kevin Lytle each scored one. In photo, Northern's Evan Werner works for position against a Carlisle's defender.
____The Northern boys' lacrosse team opened the 2012 campaign against Carlisle on Monday, March 26. Carlisle, ranked as one of the pre-season teams to beat along with Hershey, CV and Trinity, wasted no time flexing their muscles. The Thundering Herd burst to an early lead en route to a 13-4 victory over the Polar Bears.
____Northern returns just five starters after going 13-3 overall and 8-3 in the division last year. The Polar Bears have had scrimmages, including a tie with Central York and a 4-0 record in a multi-team event at Spring Grove. But now the regular season is in full stride and Northern was eager to get into the win column as they hosted Bishop McDevitt High School on March 28. The Polar Bears also host Spring Grove this Saturday, March 31, at 11 a.m.
____Head coach Jeff Miller is in his fourth year at the helm and is assisted by Steve Lynes.
