Railroad crossing to close in May
By Peggie Williams
____After a six-year battle, the railroad crossing on the north end of Chestnut Grove Road will finally be closed.
____The Public Utilities Commission issued an order in May 2011 that the work be completed by May 19, 2012. Norfolk Southern Railroad has been working with the township to coordinate getting the work done. The railroad company will be constructing cul-de-sac areas with wooden guiderails on either side of the tracks and a locked metal gate barrier will be placed at the track itself. The township will be responsible for 10 percent of the cost of the work plus they will have to pay for a “no outlet” sign and any other necessary signage. They will also be responsible for future maintenance to the guiderails and barriers.
____At one time, the township was requesting the cul-de-sacs meet township ordinance requirements for size and curbing, but engineer Steve Barber said that was not mentioned in the order and NSRR had something less expensive in mind.
____The cost of the project is estimated to be $150,000, making the township responsibility more than $15,000. Supervisors questioned where the money was going to come from and eventually decided it would have to come from the roads budget, which was already stretched thin.
____Notices will be sent to all residents living near the crossing who might be affected.

Monaghan Twp. revisits subdivisions
By Carolyn Hoffman
____Subdivision actions of one kind or another dominated the Feb. 13 Monaghan Township meeting.
Supervisors reapproved the plan of the Mary E. Witmer Trust, along Andersontown and N. Wharf Roads, after allowing a deferral of payment for road improvements until and unless any building permits are requested. A developer’s agreement specifying the amount for improvements and the terms of the deferral will also need to be signed by both parties.
____Also reapproved were the subdivisions of the Orchards Preservation, E. Mt. Airy Road, and Clarence L. Sterner. In both cases, the reapprovals were needed before recording the plans, as more than 90 days has passed since the initial approvals.
____Solicitor Dave Lenox circulated a prospective developer’s agreement for another developer that won’t require road widening to be performed until building permits are applied for or additional subdividing occurs.

Paper cranes for Kasey
Students craft more than 1,600 cranes to show love and support for fellow student
Photos and story by Curt Werner
Jason Swartz, seated in front on right, rallied students and faculty to create more than 1,600 cranes for Kasey Griffiths, seated in front on left. They then decorated Mrs. Marakovits’ classroom on Valentine’s Day in a surprise presentation.
____Kasey Griffiths didn’t know what to expect on Valentine’s Day when she arrived at her class with Mrs. Marakovits in Northern High School. Currently being treated for cancer, Katie walked into her classroom with the help of a cane and her mother. She was met with standing applause and more than 1,600 paper cranes hanging from the ceiling and lined up on several tables.
____Jason Swartz, a sophomore who is friends with Kasey’s brothers Kato and Kaleb, read that the crane could bring good luck. A Japanese legend says the crane, a symbol of happiness and eternal youth, is one of the oldest birds on Earth and that it can grant a wish. As the story goes, the crane lives 1,000 years, so to make the wish come true, 1,000 folded cranes (one for each year of life) must be constructed. After reading the legend, Jason went to Mrs. Marakovits with the idea to make 1,000 cranes for Kasey.
____"The entire school got behind the project. Students and teachers all chipped in. The paper cranes were made during study halls, in the art classes, after school and in students’ homes. Even the metal shop made metal cranes," said Jason. "My goal was 1,000 cranes and we did more than 1,600."
____Before Kasey got to class on Feb. 14, they hung hundreds of cranes of different shapes and colors around the classroom. One large crane had Kasey’s name written on one of its wings. Then, Jason stood in front of the class and read "The Legend of the Crane," telling how the legend began. By having so many folded cranes, happiness and recovery from illness would be granted.
____The class also presented Kasey with several gifts, including the metal crane made in the metal shop and a book titled, "The Ancient Art of Origami." They asked Kasey how long she thought it took for the school to make the massive amount of cranes. "A month," she guessed. "All of this was done in one week," said Jason. "Everyone worked together."
The class hung hundreds of cranes from the ceiling in a show of support for Kasey Griffiths, who is battling leukemia.

____Achieving several personal records, Northern High School swimmers performed well at last weekend's Mid-Penn Conference Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School. While keeping a focus on the upcoming District III meet and not tapering for Mid-Penn, Polar Bear athletes still set 14 personal records and seven season-best times.
____The girls' team placed 14th overall and was the sixth-highest scoring team among Class AA schools. Finishing sixth overall, the boys' team was the second-highest scoring AA team, just behind Susquehanna Township.
