Zeek’s Coffee House – There’s a new bean in town
By Carla Maddox

Owned by Doug and Beth Pendergist, Zeek’s Coffee House offers a quick-serve breakfast/lunch destination in a coffee-house atmosphere.

____Located on Tristan Drive in Dillsburg, Zeek’s Coffee House opened Feb. 6, with its grand opening scheduled for Feb. 21. Owned by Beth and Doug Pendergist, the shop offers a quick-serve breakfast/lunch destination in a coffee-house atmosphere. Four years ago, Beth and Doug sold everything in Connecticut and moved to Central Pennsylvania with their five children. They followed Beth’s sister and parents wanting to maintain that family togetherness. Doug quit his position as a marketer/advertiser and Beth remained a home-school mom for several of their children, who now range in age from 13-22. They came without jobs, but always knew they wanted to own their own business.
____“Find the right community and do something you enjoy,” said Doug, in reference to the entrepreneurial spirit.
____While in Connecticut and throughout the past four years, both Doug and Beth were self-described “coffee-shop hounds.” In search of the perfect cup, they sniffed out every little hole-in-the-wall shop that served coffee. They discovered the “pour-over” coffee cup process and knew they wanted to elevate everyone’s view of a cup-of-Joe and share this experience. By selecting a specific type of coffee bean, grinding them up and pouring hot water slowly over the ground beans in a strange-looking coffee cup with a funnel at the bottom, each coffee drinker experiences their own personal taste of the roasted bean, whether it’s the roast or a nutty or fruity flavor.

Trash pick-up day to change
By Peggie Williams

____Franklintown Borough council reviewed a large list of forms and fees proposed by zoning officer Steve Teletnick. He has been researching what surrounding municipalities charge for their services so the borough will be in line with them. Council members asked for some time to assess the information and agreed to put it on the agenda for possible passage next month.
____A new trash contract with York Waste Disposal that lowered trash prices will also necessitate a change in the resolution that sets trash prices. This will happen in the future, “as soon as we’re sure this new arrangement will work,” said Council Vice President Tony Vasco.
____The council agreed that York Waste could change trash pick-up days to Tuesday. They will do a mailing to each household explaining the change.

Plan could bring profound change to Wellsville
By Carolyn Hoffman

____Wellsville Borough Council found some irregularities in Warrington Township’s proposed rezoning plan during a first look at it during the Feb. 6 session. The council discovered some properties shown on the plan are actually in the borough and not in the township.
____Council members also noted that the plan basically rezones the entire area around Wellsville to the village commercial zone, which allows for uses such as medical centers, bed-and-breakfasts, home occupations, churches, day care, retail stores and car repair/sales. According to the council, such a change might profoundly impact the area and the town in a few generations. In the near term, many of those allowed uses would be limited by the current lack of public sewer facilities.
____Officially, Warrington Township asked Wellsville to comment on the plan, and to that end, Wellsville Borough Council decided to forward the plan to the planning commission for its input.

By Robert Manbeck

Varsity basketball players Tanner Dixon and Zach Fish presents a check from Shooting For Smiles to Derek Hart, Tammi and Jeff Zeigler, Douglas Fickel and Kyle Wilbur.

____More than $7,200 was raised for the Miranda K. Zeigler Foundation at the Third Annual “Shooting for Smiles” community event held at Northern Middle School on Jan. 28. This amount surpassed the $5,800 raised in January 2011 and $5,100 raised in January 2010.
____Tammi and Jeff Zeigler established the foundation to raise funds for youths being treated for cancer at the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Their daughter, Miranda, lost her brief battle with leukemia there on Jan. 30, 2009. It was Miranda’s wish to help other teens with cancer. Upon her passing, “Miranda’s Smile” was created to provide gifts of cheer and grant mini-wishes to those teens, some of whom attended the Jan. 28 community event.
____Members of the Northern boys' basketball teams competed in free-throw competitions with the top two players from each team having a shoot-off to determine the top shooters. Winners by grade were as follows: Bears – Dustin Bishop; seventh grade – Josh Barrett; eighth grade – Jared Kearns; ninth grade – Zach Zinn; varsity/JV – Jeff Berwager. The overall shooting champion was Jeff Berwager.

By Joe Guty

Northern's head coach Ron McDonald gives Evan Werner (middle) a high five at the end of the game after defeating Gettysburg 58 - 57 as David Cuckovic #22 and Zach Fish #24 look on. Werner hit the game-winning shot with 10 seconds remaining.

____Could the Northern H.S. boys' varsity basketball team earn a spot in the PIAA District III Class AAA Playoffs? When the week began they were ranked 21. After a loss to Cumberland Valley on Monday, the Polar Bears fell to 22nd. The top 20 teams qualify.
____However, things got interesting on Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the team's final regular-season game. Northern had a score to settle against Gettysburg. Facing the league foe on the Warrior's own turf, the Polar Bears remembered a loss at home to Gettysburg in mid-January. Northern led 28-26 through two quarters but Gettysburg responded with a 19-7 third quarter run.
____The Polar Bears then returned the favor and fought back. In the waning seconds, senior guard Evan Werner's electrifying baseline jumper gave the visitors a 58-57 victory. Werner finished the night with 18 points, while senior Jeff Berwager led with 21 points. Northern improved to 12-10 (7-5 in the Colonial Division) while Gettysburg fell to 14-8 (8-4 in the division). Other scorers for Northern included senior Zach Fish (8), junior Travis Saylor (6) and junior Tanner Dixon (5).
