Joe Paterno 1926 - 2012

The statue of Joe Paterno at Beaver Stadium remains the center of attention in State College as students, alumni and fans continue to visit the memorial by the hundreds, leaving flowers, photos and notes to commemorate the Penn State legend. Some light candles, others yell, "Go Penn State," all in memory of the man affectionately known as JoePa, whose career at Penn State spanned more than half a century.
On Sunday, Jan. 29, a steady flow of visitors paid their respects at the statue. An American flag was draped over Paterno's shoulders and some offerings were beginning to weather. With so many fans leaving their remembrances, the wall above the statue is lined with burnt-out candles and wilted flowers, while deflated balloons and footballs lay on the ground at the statue's feet.
Paterno's statue stands tall, with one hand raised to greet Penn State football fans as they enter Beaver Stadium. It serves as a memorial to a man who dedicated his life not only to promote the sport, but also to make Penn State proud. The flowers will wilt, the candles will burn out and the notes will fade. But the memory of JoePa will live on forever.

____The Northern York County Historical and Preservation Society (NYCHAPS) board of directors held its first meeting of the year on Jan. 17, welcoming their newest member, Cathy Cavanaugh. Her election at the general membership meeting earlier in the month coincided with changes to the by-laws that expanded the board from nine members to eleven.
____Mark Hagenbuch, who is beginning his second year as NYCHAPS president, said he hopes this expansion will encourage more people to step forward and play a role in leading NYCHAPS into the future.
____NYCHAPS began its 28th year with a “State of the Society” meeting on Jan. 5. The members heard from committee chairmen on the accomplishments of the past year, as well as plans for the upcoming year.
____Some of the highlights included archivist Greg Wonders, who reported that there are now 6,225 objects and 1,107 photos in the collection. Herb Bomberger reported that several new agricultural events held at Dill's Tavern were successful and the number of events will be increased. Sam McKinney reported that the Wheelwrights Shop at Dill's Tavern is nearly complete and progress on the Log Barn is picking up speed. ____Myra Reichart reported that 12 docents generously gave their time in 2011 in an attempt to keep both NYCHAPS buildings open for tours on Sundays throughout a seven-month season. Three members of the Northern High School history club gave a brief report on their activities to support NYCHAPS and other community organizations. Also, Bryan Tate, from the York County Community Foundation, was present to answer questions about the new NYCHAPS endowment fund established at the end of 2011.

Dollar General subdivision delayed, study requested
By Carolyn Hoffman

____Wellsville’s planning commission didn’t get to decide on the Dollar General store subdivision at its Jan. 24 meeting, as was planned.
____Approvals from several state agencies were not yet in hand, so the developer emailed an extension request shortly before the meeting began. When the meeting convened, the planning commission granted an extension until April, later designating Wednesday, April 11, at 7 p.m. for its next meeting.
____One of the outstanding approvals still needed is from the York County Conservation District, which reportedly decided a wetland study from the Army Corps of Engineers was needed. According to reports from residents at the meeting, that group was seen at the site last week, though Wellsville has not yet received any written information about the results of the study.
____Other permits or approvals needed and not yet received are those for PennDOT’s highway occupancy permit and sewage permit.
