Remembering JoePa
Story and Photo by Curt Werner
____The statue of Joe Paterno at Beaver Stadium remains the center of attention in State College as students, alumni and fans continue to visit the memorial by the hundreds, leaving flowers, photos and notes to commemorate a Penn State legend. Some light candles, others yell, "Go Penn State," all in memory of the man affectionately known as JoePa, whose career at Penn State spanned more than half a century.
____On Sunday, Jan. 29, a steady flow of visitors paid their respects at the statue, which now has an American flag draped over Paterno's shoulders, but the offerings were beginning to weather. With so many fans leaving their remembrances, the wall above the statue is now lined with burnt-out candles and wilted flowers, while deflated balloons and footballs lay on the ground at the statue's feet.
____Even still, Paterno's statue stands tall, with one hand raised to greet the throngs of Penn State football fans as they enter Beaver Stadium. It serves as a memory of a man who gave his life not only to promote the sport, but also to make Penn State proud. The flowers will wilt, the candles will go out and the writing on the notes will fade. But the memory of JoePa will live forever.

Superintendent Dr. Linda Lemmon, Northern York County School District, will be retiring at the end of the school year on
June 30 after serving the district for almost 19 years, three years as superintendent.
____ Although she has been at the helm of the Northern York County School District for only three years, Superintendent Linda Lemmon has been a very active and visible part of the school district for almost 19 years. On Thursday, Jan. 19, the school board accepted her resignation on June 30 for the purpose of retirement.
____ Lemmon began her career with the district in July 1993, when she was hired as principal of Dillsburg Elementary upon the retirement of Larry Rhone. In addition to completing her administrative duties, Lemmon always made sure to spend as much time with the students as possible. In addition to visiting classrooms, the gym and the playground, she directed a number of musicals in her building.
____ “The job as elementary principal was my favorite position with the district,” she said. “At that time, there were 685 kids in that building (Dillsburg Elementary). I got to direct the elementary musical, dance and play with the kids,” she added.
____ In addition to her job at the elementary school, Lemmon helped to boost the number and use of computers throughout the district’s schools.
____ Later, she served seven years as the assistant superintendent for the district. In June 2009, she became the acting superintendent upon the retirement of Dr. Brian Small.
____ Within the year, the board appointed her superintendent.
____ Prior to coming to Northern, Lemmon worked for the Lincoln Intermediate Unit.
____ Lemmon and her husband will retire to North Carolina where she plans to sit on the beach and read. She said they are looking forward to spending time together.

Travis Saylor jumps between two Waynesboro players for a rebound last Friday, Jan. 20.
____And just like that, the Polar Bears quickly erased the memory of a six-game losing streak and have now won three consecutive games.
____The Northern varsity improved to 9-8 overall (5-4 in the Mid-Penn Colonial Division) with a 51-39 road win against James Buchanan on Tuesday night, Jan. 24. A 33-17 halftime lead helped the Bears' cause as Jeff Berwager (13 points) and Travis Saylor (11 points) led the way. Other scorers for Northern included Tanner Dixon (8), Zach Fish (8), Zac Ilgenfritz (6) and Evan Werner (5). Buchanan fell to 4-13 overall and 0-9 in the league.
____The Polar Bears defeated Waynesboro 57-50 on Friday night, Jan. 20, and last Wednesday the Bears cruised past Halifax 76-42 for a non-league win. That came on the heels of a tough loss to league leader Greencastle the night before.
____"It all started out with a tremendous effort against the undefeated Blue Devils where our effort was outstanding," said head coach Ron McDonald earlier this week.
____At Waynesboro, the Northern defense was solid as the Bears bolted to a 17-2 first quarter lead. By halftime it was 33-17 Northern. The Bears kept pace in the third quarter before the Indians hit some three-pointers in the fourth. Northern's defense would not be denied and they held on to the victory.
