Ted Baker sprays water on a hot spot from a window on the second floor of a townhouse in the 100 block of Twin Hills Road, Franklin Township, today at around 7:59 a.m. A neighbor in the Twin Hills development saw the fire in the upstairs window and called 911, according to Franklintown Deputy Chief Wilbur Stough. The neighbor then knocked on the door, woke the resident and got him out. First on the scene was Baker. Stough said the fire was contained to the second floor around the window and no one was injured. Fire companies from Franklintown, Dillsburg, Monroe, York Springs and Upper Allen responded.

Stormwater, signs addressed at Washington Twp. meeting
By Carolyn Hoffman
____Washington Township’s January 16 supervisors’ meeting was short, with just three items of business approved. Supervisors officially released the $36,000 bond for Mountain Ridge Church after assurances from their engineer that the stormwater detention pond volume was adequate, a concern that delayed the bond release for one month.
____Supervisors also exonerated the tax collector from unpaid per capita taxes for 2011. The move does not mean any unpaid taxes will not be collected, but they will become the responsibility of the York-Adams Tax Bureau.
____Also approved was a change in the zoning officer’s hours. The new hours will be Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.
____The solicitor reported that approval of a new stormwater management ordinance, required under new state provisions, is likely still a few months from being ready. She did report that the new requirements won’t require additional submissions from farmers, as long as they have a conservation plan, also known as a Chapter 102 plan.
____Another regulation that affects local municipalities is one requiring road signs to be reflective. Any sign that does not have reflectivity – or loses it – must be replaced with a sign that meets the new reflectivity requirements. However, all signs do not need to be replaced immediately, as was originally feared. All signs must meet the new standards by 2015.
____Dillsburg EMS reported three calls in Washington Township in December, out of a total of 113. Franklintown Fire Co. responded to 24 calls during December, with one in Washington, while Wellsville Fire Co. had 16 calls with one in Washington, for a total of 26 calls in Washington in 2011.

Polar Bears run winning streak to 8
Now 9-2, ranked 9th in District 3
By David Reed
On Monday, Jan. 16, the Northern Polar Bear wrestling team defeated Gettysburg 38-24. Northern's Gunnar Merovich tries to pin his opponent Gettysburg's Conner Smith, winning with a technical fall at the 113-pound weight class.
____ Building on the sweep at the Warwick duals, the Northern varsity wrestling squad extended its winning streak to eight matches this past week with three Mid-Penn Colonial League wins. In the midst of this streak, the team has also found its way into the PIAA District 3 power rankings for the first time since 2007.
____ The Polar Bears beat Middletown, 39-26, Waynesboro, 42-24, and Gettysburg 38-24 last week, improving their league mark to 3-1 and 9-2 overall with four duals matches remaining. Based on previous year’s results, each of those wins could have been considered upsets by some, but not to this team. First-year coach Mark Murphy and his staff has them believing they can compete with anyone and the wrestlers are certainly responding.
