State of economy a concern for New Year's Eve Pickle Drop
Stories by Jeffrey B. Roth

____Mild weather drew hundreds of people to downtown Dillsburg Saturday night to welcome 2012 at the annual Pickle Drop.
____With the advent of a new year, people often reflect on the events of the past year and envision what the new year will bring. Traditionally, news organizations will review the events of the previous year.
____The Associated Press top 10 stories listed the killing of Osama bin Laden as the No. 1 story of the year. The earthquake and tsunami in Japan, along with the related meltdown of one of its nuclear power plants, placed second; the protests in the Arab world was third; and the European financial crisis came in at No. 4.
____While the AP poll placed the state of the U.S. economy in fifth place, several people at Dillsburg’s Pickle Drop said the national economy was their top concern. In fact, three out of four people interviewed said they lost a job during 2011.
____Gregg and Kathy Smith, of New Cumberland, said the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with the economy, placed first in their review of 2011. Falling employment and the slow economic recovery is a continuing problem, they said. As for state and local issues, both said the announcement that Harrisburg declared bankruptcy was one of the top stories. For 2012, Kathy Smith said she would like to reduce the stress in her life. Gregg agreed and added that he hoped the economic situation would improve.
____“The fact that our government is screwing over the general population” was a major hallmark of 2011, said Sharon Berkebile, of Mechanicsburg.

Board split on some positions
By Peggie Williams

____
After a long reorganization meeting on Jan 3, Franklin Township saw little change in its organization, but there were a handful of no-confidence votes for some of its employees.
____Naomi Decker voiced objections to rehiring solicitor Stacey MacNeal, saying she felt the township was getting some bad advice and “there have been some things that she should have been doing that she didn’t and it’s costing us in the long run.”
____Ed Campbell felt differently stating that MacNeal had given “good advice and good service” in the years she had been with them.
____In the end, MacNeal was rehired at the rate of $130 per hour. But with a split vote it was decided the township would do some research into other available attorneys. Decker, Don Lerew and new supervisor John Holden voted for the motion, while Campbell and John Shambaugh voted against.
____A similar decision was made in regards to the zoning officer position. Brian Fahey currently holds both that position and the position of building codes officer.
____Campbell suggested the township might be better served by separating the positions and looking for someone else to be zoning officer. He feels that splitting the position will provide a better set of checks and balances for the township.
____A vote to keep the two positions together and Fahey on as both passed with Campbell and Shambaugh voting no.
____Immediately following, a decision to research the pros and cons of separating the two positions and who might be available to fill the zoning officer position passed, with Campbell, Shambaugh and Lerew in favor and Holden and Decker opposed.

On Thursday, Dec. 29, the Northern boys basketball team defeated Mount Calvary Christian School 60-44 on the first day of the Big Spring Holiday Classic Basketball Tournament. Steve Manbeck gets two points driving down the middle of the key.

____
Tournament Champions. It has a nice ring to it. In boys' high school basketball last week, Northern's record improved to 5-2 overall as they claimed the Big Spring Holiday Classic Tournament with a 46-45 overtime win over the host Bulldogs.
____ In the championship game, the Polar Bears fell behind early to Big Spring. With a seven point first quarter lead, the Bulldogs kept the pressure on in the second frame while the cold shooting Bears were 3-for-20 from the field. With the hosts ahead 24-13 at halftime, the Bears regrouped. And received a new game strategy from head coach Ron McDonald.
____ “I told the team at halftime that we need to quit settling for 15 ft jumpers and get the ball to our post players, continue to work hard on defense, and that by the end of the 3rd quarter it would be a tie game,” said McDonald.

Blood, Sweat, Tears … and Glitter!?
By Lydia Lynes

At their first competition, Santa's Showdown, sponsored by Pennsylvania Elite Cheerleading at the Zembo Shrine.

____ You might have seen the Northern varsity cheerleaders at a Friday night football game or a winter basketball game, but you haven't seen them like this before! They have caught the competitive spirit this year, creating a competitive cheerleading squad.
____ Practicing numerous hours every week, the girls have worked their booties off to perfect their routine. In a cheer competition, the girls get three minutes to prove to the judges they are the best in jumps, stunts, tumbling, dance, cheer and -- most importantly -- spirit! On Dec. 11, the cheerleaders performed an exhibition at Santa’s Showdown, sponsored by Pennsylvania Elite Cheerleading at the Zembo Shrine. Their hard work paid off, as the squad earned a trophy for outstanding performance.
____ On Dec. 17, the girls competed in the District 3 PIAA Cheer Competition at Central Dauphin East High School. Though the girls did not place in that competition, their score tallied only three points less than the first-place winner.
