Polar Bear Foundation hosts community leaders breakfast
Submitted by Dr. Jon Stuckey, President Polar Bear Foundation
Round-table discussions underway at the Polar Bear Foundation's community leaders breakfast held Dec. 2 at the Range End Golf Club.
___The Polar Bear Foundation (PBF) recently held its first community leaders breakfast at Range End Golf Club. The purpose of the event was to gather select community leaders from business, education, government and religious organizations to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the students of the Northern York County School District.
___Rich Eichelberger, of Lobar Inc., served as the keynote speaker. The title of his presentation was “Building Community for the Benefit of Our Children.” Eichelberger is highly qualified to speak about community given that his ancestor, Leonard Eichelberger, arrived in Dillsburg in 1775. Eight generations of Eichelbergers have resided in the greater Dillsburg community since.
___Eichelberger’s company builds schools in communities across Pennsylvania, Maryland and New York. His belief is that the Northern school district ranks in the top 5 percent of all the districts he has worked with in terms of community values such as honesty, integrity and faith. These are the types of values that are needed to build a strong community.
___Eichelberger explained that he supports the Polar Bear Foundation because it helps the community encourage our students to succeed. Moreover, he feels strongly that you get back from life what you invest in others. Part of his family’s success story, he says, is the people of Dillsburg.
___The community leaders in attendance were then asked to discuss several questions in small groups at their tables. The questions focused on prioritizing the needs of students in the district and identifying programs that could be created to address those needs. The roundtable conversations were facilitated by PBF board members. The results of the discussions will be summarized and presented to the PBF board for further consideration and action.
Keynote speaker Rich Eichelberger stresses the importance of building the community to benefit the children.

Warrington Twp. approves $1.4 million budget
By Carolyn Hoffman
___Warrington Township supervisors approved a $1.4 million budget for 2012 at the Dec. 8 session. General fund revenues and expenses are slightly less than $800,000, with another $206,000 coming from the state liquid fuels fund. The rest is mostly unspent liquid fuels money from previous years.
___In other activity at the session, a group of residents voiced their concerns about Warrington Hunt Club, saying they believe the shooting club is not operating in a way that is consistent with the agreement between the township and the club. They questioned the shooting direction of at least one of the shooting stations and cited excessive recent shooting, especially on the day after Thanksgiving.
___Township supervisors said they have purchased a dosimeter to measure the noise level of the shooting and will follow up on the other items. Supervisors noted that most of the terms listed in the agreement were completed acceptably and that a land development plan was also submitted.

Wellsville girl meets Justin Bieber at Hard Rock Cafe
Justin Bieber takes a moment with Katrina Thomas in New York City at the Hard Rock Cafe on Nov. 18. By meeting Bieber, Thomas’ dream came true as part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Meeting Justin Bieber was a dream for one Wellsville girl.
____ Katrina Thomas, 14, who has been confined to a wheelchair as a result of a spinal injury she suffered in a car accident at age 4, said she wanted to be Bieber's “one less-lonely girl,” a line from one of the pop star’s hit songs. On Nov. 18, at the Times Square Hard Rock Cafe in New York City, the Make-A-Wish Foundation made Katrina’s dream come true, along with the dreams of 28 other Bieber fans.
____ “They all sat up in front of the stage at Hard Rock Cafe,” said Tammy Thomas, Katrina's mother. “They were with [Bieber] from 9 a.m. to noon and had breakfast with him, watched ‘Never Say Never’ (an autobiographical movie of Bieber's life) and he answered questions from the kids.”
____ Tammy said the Canadian-born singer, who also acts, took time to talk to each fan individually. Katrina, a ninth grader at Northern High School who is quadriplegic, was “a little starstruck,” she said.
“He said ‘Hi, how are you Katrina?’” said Katrina, who speaks softly as a result of respiratory difficulties from her injuries. “I gave him a glass coaster with my picture and ‘Thank you’ written on it. He gave me an autographed picture.”
____ Bieber said he enjoys working with Make-A-Wish Foundation by meeting fans because “it puts a smile on their faces.”
