Hal Anderson and Louie DeNofrio demonstate the proper manner to fold the American Flag, in preparation of retiring the old flag at Northern High School on Thursday, Nov. 10. The fold represents the tricorn hat worn in the Revolutionary War. NHS held a Veterans Day Breakfast that morning and hosted guest speaker Colonel Steven L. Hite, who is currently a student at the United States Army War College in Carlisle.
____ To commemorate Veterans Day, students of Dillsburg Elementary School saluted veterans of the armed forces through music and a skit about the meaning of the observance.
____ The event was one of three held in the district. On Thursday morning, the high school held its annual Veterans Day breakfast in the cafeteria. Following the meal, area veterans attended a special program celebrating Veterans Day. Col. Steve Hite of the Carlisle Army War College was the keynote speaker. Another breakfast with veterans was held Friday morning at Northern Elementary.
____ The high school breakfast program has been held for six years. It is hosted by social studies students.
____ In the elementary gymnasium, students and faculty displayed a large, handmade representation of the American flag. On each side, the students had created copies of four branches of the military: Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.

No tax increase for this year
By Peggie Williams
_
Bill Turner, right, receives a plaque of appreciation for his six years of service as a Carroll Township supervisor from board of supervisors chairperson Nancy Livingston. Turner’s last meeting will be December 12.
____ Carroll Township gave their approval to advertise a budget of $2,461,138 that will not include a tax increase. A $60,000 deficit that still remained after an October 27 workshop meeting on the budget was filled by cutting the road highway maintenance allocation and reducing the police overtime budget by another $15,000.
____ Any road projects next year will have to come out of the $146,000 they anticipate receiving from their share of the state’s Liquid Fuels Tax.
____ Supervisors passed an ordinance to put a four-way stop sign at the intersection of Siddonsburg and Chestnut Grove roads. There are already signs on the township owned Chestnut Grove Road and it is up to PENNDOT to install the signs on the state owned Siddonsburg Road. Township engineer Steve Barber suggested that the township send a letter informing PennDOT that the ordinance had been passed and asking for a time line of when they expect the work to be done.
____ The township will be sending the owners of CaGe Storage a letter notifying them that they have several drainage issues to be fixed on their property. A letter will also be sent to a homeowner in Logan Downs to remove a berm he has built in a drainage easement to keep the stormwater draining from CaGe out of his property.
____ These problems were brought to the township’s attention by homeowners in Stone Bridge Crossing whose yards are being affected by the violations.

New Dillsburg charter signed
Marine Corps veterans form Dillsburg Marine Corps League detachment
By Jeffrey B. Roth
___A group of Dillsburg-area U.S. Marine Corps veterans signed a charter last week to officially create a local U.S. Marine Corps League.
___John Botchie, commandant of the Leatherneck Square, 1386 Detachment, said he was a member of the Hummelstown League. There are also Marine Corps League detachments in Gettysburg, Carlisle, New Cumberland and other locations, but none in the Dillsburg area. Regulations require that a detachment cannot be formed if it falls within the minimum distance jurisdiction of an existing group.
___“I am the senior vice commandant at the Hummelstown Detachment,” said Botchie, who served in Vietnam with the Marines from 1964-68. “It was my responsibility to get new members. I went around Dillsburg asking people I knew who served in the Marines if they wanted to join our detachment. They said they didn't want to have to travel to other areas, so I researched how many members were needed to start a detachment.”.

Defense linemen Skylor Ford, #51, and Zach Barber, #74, block the Pioneers for Elijah Locke in Friday’s 42-6 loss against Lampeter Strasburg, ending Northern’s 2011 campaign at 6-5 for the year.
____ Facing No.2 seed Lampeter Strasburg last Friday, the No. 15 seed Northern H.S. varsity football team fell short in its District III, Class AAA playoff run. The host Pioneers utilized a speedy offensive attack to soundly defeat the Polar Bears, 42-6.
____ Northern ended the 2011 campaign at 6-5 on the year (and 5-2 in the Mid Penn Colonial Division). Lampeter Strasburg, meanwhile, hosts No. 7 seed Shippensburg in this Friday's second round as the Greyhounds stunned No. 7 seed Greencastle 10-7 in their opening round skirmish.
____ Northern had its hands full early on as the Pioneers bolted to a 21-0 first quarter lead and 42 points by halftime.
____ “Their offense is high speed,” said head coach Rick Mauck. “We moved the ball in spots but when you get so far behind it's tough.”
____ After forcing the Pioneers to punt, Northern took over on their own six-yard line. Quarterback Alex Dale's pass was picked off by Jordan Groff who returned it for a touchdown at 9:13. Northern could not answer on the next series and then the Pioneers capitalized on Dan Neff's nine-yard touchdown run. With the extra point it was 14-0. Neff added another score--a 26 yard run-- at 2:10 in the first quarter. The Polar Bears fought back as Dale completed a 54 yard pass to Travis Saylor. ____ ____ Another toss to Dom Salomone was good for six more yards. As the second quarter began, so did Northern's hopes as Kevin Lytle found the end zone on a 14-yard counter play. The extra point attempt by Zacc Thomas was blocked.

Northern High School Marching Band achieves second place at state competition
Submitted by Frank DiPrima
2011 Northern High School Marching Band
____ Culminating the 2011 season of performances and competitions, the Northern High School Marching Band earned an impressive second-place finish in the U.S. Scholastic Band Association (USSBA) State Competition held at West Chester University in early November. Northern’s program was also awarded in the “High Color Guard,” “High Visual Performance” and “High Overall Effect” categories.
____ The 2011 show, entitled “Catalyst,” was about things causing other things to happen, both musically and visually. Many in attendance felt that Northern’s program was the best in the day-long competition that included 24 bands from across the Commonwealth, and the complex scoring revealed that Northern finished only 0.65 points below the first-place score.
____ Under the tireless leadership of the band’s director, Jeremy Leidhecker, Northern performers maintain a continuous schedule of practices that demand a lot from them, both physically and intellectually. Band members must memorize and execute hundreds of maneuvers in complex and rapid group synchrony while performing detailed musical pieces in harmony. One Northern parent aptly referred to this skilled group as “band-athletes.”
