White doves are released during the closing of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend service on Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Emmittburg National Fire Academy.
_---For one day every year, the quiet town of Emmitsburg, Md., becomes the center of attention for firefighters nationwide. On Sunday, Oct. 16, firefighters and their family members gathered at Emmittburg’s National Fire Academy for a memorial service commemorating the 30th annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend.
_---The service honored 72 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2010, as well as 17 firefighters who died in previous years. Eight of the firefighters honored were from Pennsylvania. The families of the fallen heroes were called to the front of the stage one at a time, where they were presented with a folded American flag and a rose. Each family was escorted by a fireman in dress blues. Firefighters also accompanied families throughout the weekend.
_---Mike Whitzel, fire chief of Franklintown Fire Company, served as an escort for the family of Salvatore Scarentino, a fallen member of Ladder 24 in the New York City Fire Department (F.D.N.Y.). While working two consecutive shifts, Scarentino responded to one fire, nine emergencies and one false alarm. The fire required 12 units on scene. Tragically, Scarentino died from acute cardiac failure less than 12 hours after responding. He was 51.

First look at Dollar General
By Carolyn Hoffman
_---Wellsville Planning Commission and about 16 borough residents have gotten the first look at a proposed Dollar General store in the town. No action was taken at the October 19 planning meeting, though commission Chairman Victor Neubaum indicated action will be taken at the next session, planned for November 16.
_---Planning commission action will come as a recommendation to the borough council, which will then accept or reject the planning commission’s recommendation at a council meeting. Wellsville does not have a zoning ordinance, so the town can’t legally regulate building. The town does have a subdivision ordinance, and as Chairman Neubaum put it, “if they [Dollar General] comply with the ordinance, they are entitled to the use of the land.” By law, the borough must act within 90 days of the plan’s submission, which was on October 3.
_---Chairman Neubaum indicated that the town’s engineer had not yet seen the plans but will need to make recommendations about it ahead of the next meeting and report those findings to the planning commission far enough ahead of time so they can be familiar with that information. Neubaum also indicated he wanted the engineer to attend the next meeting.

_---It’s been a familiar sight on the Dillsburg square for almost a decade, but now the local coffee shop has a new owner, a new name and a new look.
_---After six weeks of renovations the Square Bean opened with a limited menu in time for Farmer’s Fair and new owner Jeff Conrady says there’s more to come. Expect to see a lot of the old favorite menu items returning as well as some new items and a few new twists. “To give it our own feel,” he said.
_---Conrady, a youth pastor at the Dillsburg Brethren in Christ Church, just up the street from the shop, was first a customer, then an employee and now the owner.

_-“It was a dark and stormy night...” as I headed to Ms. Carole Knisely's home for an interview at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday evening. Fighting more rain, headlight blindness, and lightning flashes while trying to locate her home in an unfamiliar suburban development, I, finally, reached my destination. Whew, made it!
_-Carole had a busy day and arrived home only a short time before I did. She greeted me with a huge smile and a warm hug and welcomed me inside. Was this professional lady the same petite freshman who I remembered carrying a baritone that was, in fact, bigger than she was when I was a senior at NHS? Could this be the student that Mr. Fyler, our band director, affectionately called, “The baritone with legs?” Yes, it was her!
_-Carole lead me into the kitchen and waited for my raincoat. After taking two Diet Cokes from my coat pockets, I turned and saw where the interview would take place - at the kitchen table. There were cookies, crackers and cheese, a glass of cold water, and the 1973 NHS yearbook artistically arranged awaiting our conversation. As we settled in, I saw Carole briefly glance at what looked like a page of handwritten notes, and then she began, “I was very blessed with a fabulous family. I have two brothers, Gary and Tim. They are great brothers. They were very protective of me growing up, and my parents were very loving. Dad was a self-employed local farmer in the area, and Mom was a war-bride from Antwerp, Belgium.”

_After falling to Greencastle Antrim last weekend, the Northern H.S. football squad faces a rejuvenated Big Spring team in Newville this Friday. The Polar Bears dropped to 4-4 and 3-2 in the Colonial Division at Bostic Field last Friday after Greencastle powered to their fifth straight league win and a 42-7 victory.
_This week, host Big Spring has some momentum from their 35-0 shutout over James Buchanan. Northern, meanwhile, is motivated to get another league win.
_“We will work hard this week to have a better effort at Big Spring,” said head coach Rick Mauck on Monday. “Big Spring is now on a three game winning streak and playing good ball. Running back William Wiser runs it 20-30 times a game in their option attack. We must play good assignment defense and take care of the football when we have it.”
_The Blue Devils were paced by all-purpose back Denton Cordell who accounted for the three, first-quarter touchdowns . Cordell caught a 21 yard pass from Grant Murray at 9:52. After a fumble recovery, a three-play drive resulted in a five yard touchdown run by Cordell at 9:05. Later in the quarter, his team, capitalized on another fumble recovery; the senior hauled in a 43-yard TD pass from Murray.
