Dillsburg man remembers...
By Jeffrey B. Roth
_---The 10th anniversary of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 stirred the memories of many Americans.
_---Shanksville, Pa. is the site of a new national park memorial to Flight 93, which crashed in a field. Former President George W. Bush, and former President Bill Clinton, participated in the two-hour ceremony honoring the 40 passengers and crew who battled terrorists for control of the passenger jet. A non-partisan effort is being conducted to raise $10 million to complete the memorial's first phase.
_---Dillsburg resident Stan Carpenter said the anniversary reminded him of his Sept. 6, 2005 trip to the crash site. While there, he met and talked with some family members of the victims of the terrorists thwarted plan.

McDonald’s set to get new look
By Peggie Williams
The McDonald’s by the Dillsburg Giant was approved by Carroll Township to get a new look.
_---Carroll Township supervisors approved a plan that will give the Dillsburg McDonald’s a new look and more interior space. The 470 square foot expansion will include better handicap accessibility in the restrooms as well as more seating. _---Outside improvements will include the addition of another order point for the drive thru lane, better signage at the entrance and exit points on the parking lot. There will be the same amount of parking places.
_---In other business, supervisors will not update the township trash ordinance. Several changes to the current ordinance, including the collection of yard waste, are mandated by the state now that the township has topped 5,000 residents. But the township has not received an official notice of non-compliance from the Department of Environmental Protection yet, and might not for up to two years. In the meantime, there is a movement in the state legislature to raise the population requirement to 10,000 before the changes are necessary, so supervisors decided to wait.
_---Without the changes to the trash ordinance, there was no need to add a restriction on burning lawn waste to the township burn ordinance, so that action was also dropped.

Craver trial stirs controversy
By Jeffrey B. Roth
Photo by Curt Werner Michael and Nanette Craver are escorted from the Carroll Township Municipal building on Thursday, April 29, 2010 following their preliminary hearing. The couple are charged with first-degree murder of their adopted 7-year-old son, Nathaniel, and will face life in prison if convicted. The trial is now underway in York.
_- _-The trial of Michael and Nanette Craver, charged with killing their 7-year-old, adopted, Russian son, Nathaniel, is now underway, in York County.
_- _-A controversy has erupted over the secret selection of jurors in the case being heard by Common Pleas Judge John S. Kennedy. The date of the jury selection was not listed on the public court docket.
_- _-Kennedy defended his decision not to notify the York County Clerk of Courts about the date in advance as a way to avoid too much pre-trial publicity in the case. Kennedy said that publicity can make it difficult to form a non-partial jury.
The Cravers, of 36 Blair Mountain Road, Carroll Township, were charged with homicide and reckless endangerment in the Aug. 25, 2009 death of Nathaniel.
_- _-The boy and a twin sister were adopted from a Russian orphanage by the Cravers in 2003. While the prosecution charges the parents with abuse, their defense counsel is arguing that the child was troubled and inflicted the injuries on himself.

_- _-Northern squares off against cross town rival Mechanicsburg this Friday night under the lights at Bostic Filed. The home opener for the Polar Bears (1-1) follows their first win of the season last week against Muhlenberg and the Wildcat's first win of their season -- a 49-7 pasting of Gettysburg.
_- _-On the road against Muhlenberg, Northern finally found its rhythm in the third quarter when it scored three touchdowns en route to a 49-28 victory. Elijah Locke had a career best game with 181 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries. Dominic Salomone added 135 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. Kevin Lytle also contributed 61 yards on eight carries.
_- _-An 88 yard, 10-play drive put Northern on the board first as Tristan Kalinay threw a nine yard touchdown pass to Dom Salomone at 6:24. Zaac Thomas' extra point made it 7-0. Thomas would make a total of seven extra points on the night as the drama was only beginning in the high scoring game. It could be argued that the teams were well rested due to another 2011 weather related event.
