USO dance
Maple Shade is filled with dancers for WWII event

By Peggie Williams

Tomye Harbold and her husband, Larry, dance to WWII tunes played by the Will Fisher Orchestra during the USO dance at the Maple Shade Barn on Saturday, Aug. 13.

--------What better way is there to finish a day of honoring the veterans of WWII than to attend a USO dance? And more than 100 people did just that as they danced to, listened to or just conjured up memories to the big band music of the Will Fisher Orchestra.
--------Although weather threatened to move the event from the courtyard at Dill's Tavern to the meeting room in the Maple Shade Barn, it was still a success, raising more than $1,500 toward the restoration of Dill’s Tavern.
--------This year the 17-piece band played only music of the WWII era. Many of the arrangements were Will Fisher originals.
--------The recreation of the popular local swing band from the 1940s and ’50s was the idea of former Northern High School band director Clair Zeiders and one of his student musicians, Tom Robson. They first performed four years ago, during Dillsburg’s 175th anniversary celebration. This is the third year the event has been a fundraiser for the Northern York County Historical and Preservation Society. (NYCHAPS)
--------The big band sounds of the WFO were a staple in the entertainment industry of Central Pennsylvania during the 1940s and ’50s, but they traveled as far away as Philadelphia playing the era’s most popular hits.

Lee Ann Goodyear, Heather Conley and Donna Foster sing “Bugle Boy” during the USO dance held at the NYCHAPS Maple Shade Barn on Saturday, Aug. 13.

Rep. Perry holds meeting on legislation
By Mary Lou Bytof

Rep. Scott Perry explains his stance and concerns on recent and pending legislation at a meeting at the Carroll Township building on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

_---Area residents gathered in the Carroll Township building on Aug. 3 to hear State Rep. Scott Perry (R-Dillsburg) address their concerns on recent and pending legislation.
_---The well-organized presentation, complete with charts and graphs, was followed by a question-and- answer period.
Without the drama and turmoil of the past month in the nation’s capital, Perry’s matter-of-fact presentation was sprinkled with some frustrations inherent to politics. This was nothing new to the well-informed residents in the audience, but it did give the Boy Scout working on his community badge a lot to think about.
_---After watching a month of political antics on CNN, FOX and MSNBC, the audience assembled on Thursday was ready for some straight talk on fiscal responsibility.
_---“It’s not about how much we’re taxing, it’s what we’re spending and how we’re spending it.” Perry said. The representative said he would like to see more state money spent on infrastructure.
_---“Pennsylvania is an old organized-labor state and we have to be ready to take it on,” Perry said about some of the hurdles he and other state representatives will encounter this fall.
_---He encourages his constituents to “be aware, be informed and let your legislator know” your concerns.

Carroll Township Police Chief Sean Kapfhammer said that the auxiliary force is busy at work in the Giant Foods parking lot, above. They are asking people to move their vehicles out of fire lanes.

_---At its monthly meeting on Aug. 9, the Dillsburg Borough Council voted unanimously to pay Asphalt Paving Systems $36,456.20 for street- maintenance work completed this year. However, according to Borough Manager Karen Deibler and Councilman Hal Anderson, there is a discrepancy in what the borough paid the company and the amount it requested upon the completion of the work.
_---“The size of the streets has not changed since they began the project,” Deibler commented in addressing this discrepancy.
_---According to Councilwoman Kathryn Zeiders, residents have been complaining about the roughness of the newly-finished roads and alleys. Diebler, however, said the borough office has gotten a number of calls from people who said they like what’s been done to the streets.
_---“Keystone Alley is on the rough side,” visitor and former Council President Mark Ryder told the council. Ryder asked if the company was going to do anything more than microsurfacing the streets. Deibler answered, “No.”
_---Borough Engineer Mike Begis said that he is satisfied with the paving jobs completed in town.
_---During the meeting, Ryder congratulated the council members for their attendance at the National Night Out festivities on Aug. 2. He said that the council was well-represented at the event. The event was sponsored by the Carroll Township Police Department.

During the most recent borough meeting, several residents expressed concerns about the roughness of some alleyways, including Keystone Alley, on right.

Dillsburg student wins puppy naming contest
Story and photos by Curt Werner

---

--------What is in a name? Parents name their children, but what do children name? They name their bikes, their dolls, soldiers and later their cars. -------Gov. Tom Corbett and his wife, Susan, decided to have a contest in naming their two new puppies. The puppies are Airedales, brother and sister.
-------Children 12 years old and under were able to cast their vote online or by mail. Each child had to submit a name for each puppy and the Corbetts would pick the winners.
-------Vada McClintock, 6 1/2 years old, of Dillsburg, wanted to enter contest. Her parents, Bekka and Jason McClintock, knew time was running out in getting the names to the governor. -------“I knew we could not use the phone to cast the entry and we had til Monday to send the names on the computer,” said Bekka.
-------“A week or so later I received a phone call on my cell phone. It came up as a private number and I did not know who was calling. It was the Governor's Office advising my daughter had won naming one of the puppies. They would not say which name won,” Bekka added.
