--------Undoubtedly, it has been an incredible year for the sport of baseball in Dillsburg. On the heels of Northern High School’s center fielder Joe Tuschak’s sixth round selection by the New York Mets on June 7, the Polar Bears secured the PIAA-AAA Baseball Championship for the first time ever, on June 17.
--------So, just when you thought Dillsburg baseball couldn’t get any better, Dillsburg Youth Baseball’s “boys of summer” made history by dominating the District 14 Clarence Boyd All Star Tournament. Pool play began July 11 and finished on July 29 with Dillsburg sweeping all three age categories.
--------“This is a first,” responded Little League District 14 Administrator, Joseph Wendler, about DYB teams taking the championships in all three age divisions.
--------DYB's 7-8 year olds went undefeated in a 4-game pool play. Team members were Garrett Trostle, Wade Shumaker, Jaiten Holford, Bryce Andrews, Sam Wareham, Dylan Rubacha, Conner Hennessy, Matthew Crager, Jordan Heisey, Aiden Sherman, and Tanner Merovich. Coaching staff included Coach Dylan Merovich, Manager Preston Repman and Coach Mike Sherman.
--------“Everyone commented on how well they played together, always cheering each other on,” said Coach Dylan Merovich. “The first time we met to practice with these kids at the end of June you could see the determination to work as a team and not be beat.”
--------DYB’s 9-10 year olds dominated 6-0 in the double elimination tournament. They outscored their opponents 95-17, including two shutouts. Team members were Dylan VanKirk, Eddie Ensor, Connor McCombs, Billy Lindoerfer, Tyler Yohn, Dylan Markel, Sean Colgan, Aidan Wenger, Tommy Molsky, Danny Gray and Timmy Geiser. Co-Managers, Joel Yohn and Bill Lindoerfer, were assisted by coaching staff of Eric Ensor, Ryan VanKirk, Rich Gray, Mike Markel and Jared Wenger.
--------“Spectacular,” says Yohn, “This is BIG for Dillsburg. When you get a wave like this, you’ve got to ride it!” Yohn beamed about the players and their families, “From the first practice, their level of commitment and dedication was extraordinary.”

York County request denied
By Carolyn Hoffman

_---Joining the ranks of other surrounding municipalities, Wellsville Borough Council declined to act on a request from York County that would have allowed for the automatic dispatch of an advanced technical rescue unit for certain kinds of emergencies, such as water or trench rescue and the like. The unit can still be dispatched if the chief on the scene requests it. Local companies believe other units (Cumberland County is frequently mentioned) are closer and that their own units are well-trained for some of the kinds of rescues the county unit performs.
_---Still, the preference of the municipalities in northern York County may have little bearing on whether or not the unit is dispatched, since if a majority of county governments approve the measure, it will be adopted county-wide.
_---In other action at the August 1 session, council also voted to approve a new sign ordinance as advertized. The measure specifies the sizes of various categories of signs allowed in the borough. For example, sign sizes are different for home occupations, a housing development or for advertizing. “Flashing and intermittent” signs are restricted to those already placed in the borough.
_---Secretary Carolyn Yates reported the borough has not yet heard from the county about whether or not it will receive a grant for proposed work on Chestnut St. The borough hopes to redo the drainage on the street and slightly widen the pavement. The work is dependent on receiving the grant, and the town expects to hear sometime during August. In preparation for the work, the town has surveyed the area of the street involved so they know where both the street’s center and the town’s right of way lays.
_---A reverse subdivision creating a single lot from two small lots on Main St. was approved with minor changes and will be submitted to the county planning commission for its approval.
_---Council agreed to join with seven other municipalities in northern York County to approve the formation of an emergency operations center for the region. The proposed center will be housed in two rooms of the old Northern Middle School. The agreement is non-binding, in that if the municipalities decide the eventual financial outlay is too expensive or unfairly distributed among the municipalities, they can withdraw.
_---The fire department reported its new engine should arrive by late August or early September. The department has also done a lot of projects at the fire hall this summer, including a new roof and bringing the handicapped ramp up to current code requirements.

National Night Out held

A small boy is assisted by a volunteer as he tries out the fire hose while his dad looks on during Tuesday evening’s annual National Night Out.

_---Tuesday night, many individuals and families from Dillsburg Borough and Carroll and Monaghan Townships participated in the annual National Night Out at Logan Park sponsored by the Carroll Township Police Department.
_---The event featured a family-style cookout with the traditional picnic fare of hamburgers and hotdogs as well as baked macaroni and cheese, baked beans, Little Caesar’s pizza, sodas and snow cones.
_---After enjoying the food under the pavilion, participants migrated to view a number of exhibits from local fire companies, law enforcement agencies, businesses, and service organizations.
_---“This is wonderful,” State Representative Scott Perry said as he wheeled his 3-month-old daughter around while keeping an eye on his older daughter. “The weather is perfect, and this helps us to recognize what’s great about our community. It also gives us a chance to catch up with our neighbors and friends,” he added.
_---Perry also said he enjoyed being able to enjoy the festivities with his wife and children. In previous years, he had piloted a military helicopter and greeted the visitors at the exhibit. This year, there were two aircraft on display: an Army helicopter and a medical evacuation helicopter from Chambersburg.
_---Children rushed onto the field to see the helicopters, then they scurried back up the hill to try their hand at dunking a friend in the dunk tank, undoubtedly the coolest place at the event. Smaller tykes enjoyed the bounce house. Golden Rentals of Dillsburg donated the bounce house, dunk tank, and snow cone machine. Brewsters provided the ice cream.
_---Other attractions popular with the youngsters were the Citizens Hose Company No. 1 fire safety house, and face-painting sponsored by Cornerstone Chiropractic. The kids even lined up to collect school supplies, courtesy of the York County Adult Probation table.
_---Some youngsters, such as Congressman Todd Platt’s son, got to try on a bullet proof vest, courtesy of the two DEA agents who brought a display of drug enforcement literature. Rep. Platts made it a point to thank the men for their service to the public. Back in the area after the controversial vote on the national debt ceiling in Washington yesterday, Rep. Platts commented on the emotional experience of the entire House of Representatives welcoming back Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords with a standing ovation. The congresswoman was critically wounded by a sniper in her home district seven months ago.
_---“Gabby is loved by everyone in the house,” her colleague said.
_---Adults and youngsters alike enjoyed petting the puppies-in-training and greeting their trainers from Susquehanna Service Dogs. According to the trainer of Harriet, a 6-month-old yellow lab, almost all their service dogs are Labrador Retrievers because they are friendly, non-aggressive, easy to train and will gladly work for food. According to her trainer, some things Harriett will learn before she leaves him in a year will be how to open doors, pick up things, turn on lights and find the phone for her future owner.

Feldmiller adds one more title
Story and photo by Joe Guty

Brett Ernst, head pro at Range End Golf Club, stands between Jay Depner, left, runner up and Rex Feldmiller, champion, following the Club Championship match last Sunday.

--------Rex Feldmiller found himself in familiar territory last Sunday at Range End Golf Club. In his final match for the Club Championship title against Jay Depner, Feldmiller was 1-up after 18 holes. Early in the second round of the 36-hole match, Feldmiller made two straight birdies. That was enough cushion for him to earn his sixth club championship, 4 and 3. Feldmiller defeated Dan Ebner, 3 and 2 in Saturday's semi final.
--------Down the stretch there was some drama on the 14th hole, a 472 yard par 5. Feldmiller hit a hybrid from the fairway that found the right trap. Depner, meanwhile was on the green in three and looking a birdie putt. Feldmiller's sand blast was short of the fringe and a scuffed chip left him with a six foot par saving putt. After Depner's birdie try slid past the hole, Feldmiller drained his par putt to halve the hole.
--------Four up going into the 15th hole, a 165-yard par 3, Feldmiller's tee shot found the front apron while his opponent was in thick grass on the left edge of the green. Depner missed his par putt while conceding Feldmiller's three footer for the match (4 and 3).
--------“I wasn't hitting the ball particularly well but getting up and down,” said Feldmiller. “I was making a lot of putts. --------About midway through the second 18 I started to hitting the driver better and slowed it down a bit.”
--------The turning point for Feldmiller was back-to-back he made birdies on 11 and 12 to go to 4-up.
--------Depner, the last seed in the championship flight, had staged an upset as he knocked off defending club champion Steve Crain last week to advance to the semi-finals. On Saturday, he then edged Nate DeSantis 1-up to set up the showdown with Feldmiller.
