____ The proposed budget tentatively sets taxes to raise from the current rate of 13.87 mils to 14,3693 mils. If it passes, an owner of a home appraised at $100,000 will be paying almost $50 more taxes than he paid this year, according to district budget manager Kathy Johnson.
____ The board voted 7 to 1 to adopt the proposed budget on Thursday, May 20. Board member Ronald L. Rudy cast the only dissenting vote.
____ Rudy also voted no that evening on two other items involving spending. He cast the sole negative vote against approving the collective bargaining agreement with the district’s 248 teachers, and he was the only member to vote down a $4,832 contract with Eagle Rock, a mountain resort near Hazelton, for an administrative leadership conference.

Carroll Township
New development proposed for former Walmart site
By Peggie Williams
____ The latest attempt to put a commercial center on the property at the intersection of routes 15 and 74 was shown to the Carroll Township Planning Commission on May 13. This newest plan does not contain a building lot large enough for a big box store.
____ “We’re not interested in big boxes,” said Charlie Davis, representing the Enfield Group, which is proposing the plan. “With big boxes the promises are great, but the reality is too little.”
____ The Enfield Group’s plan includes building pads for two restaurants, a bank, a pharmacy and a hotel. Although Davis would not be more specific because of confidentiality agreements with his clients, he did say there were three banks interested in the one site.

Franklin Township
Two development plans considered
By Peggie Williams
____ Franklin Township supervisors saw two proposed plans during the May 12 township meeting.
____ The first was an 82 unit apartment complex to be located on Mountain Road between South Mountain Elementary School and Rocky Ridge Road. This plan has been before the planning commission for several months, but the developers, Delaware Valley Development, came before the supervisors to ask for a shortcut to approval because federal stimulus money is being used for the project, and a time limit on using the money is quickly approaching.
____ Normally, a development goes before the planning commission and supervisors twice, once for the preliminary plan and once for the final plan. DVD is asking that the preliminary stage be waived and they be approved for both preliminary and final plans at the same time.

Warrington Township
Township finds road work unacceptable
By Carolyn Hoffman
____ After hearing that the developer of Whitetail Terrace didn’t want to bring the road there up to the standard the township wants, Warrington Township supervisors decided to call in the $11,000 bond they hold for the work. The township is unhappy about the developer’s paving job, with engineer Chris Hoover reporting the road was paved without a center crown to channel water to the edges.
____ The road in the development was paved without notifying the township to inspect the work. Supervisors will not accept a road in a development as a township-maintained road until it meets the standards required for other roads. Calling in the bond means the township will use the bond to do the work themselves.
____ The Conley Road bridge is now barricaded to traffic, closed and will remain so until the bridge is repaired.
