A Day for Remembrance
By Marie Chomicki
___Memorial Day services, sponsored by the Dillsburg VFW, offered an opportunity for thought and reflection for residents of the community.
___Preparation for the day’s event began earlier in the week, as volunteers placed flags on the graves of the men and women who served in the military at 16 area cemeteries. On Monday morning, groups went to all the cemeteries where they read a prayer, played taps and gave a three-gun salute.
___The parade, led by Carroll Township Police and the VFW Riders and American Legion Riders, formed at the Dillsburg VFW Post 6771 on Hanover Street at 10 a.m. and proceeded to the Community Hall, where Post Commander Brendan Middaugh and Sr. Vice Commander Rob Taylor placed a wreath and raised the American flag to half mast at the veterans’ memorial.

Starliper and Barrett star at PIAA State Meet
By Joe Guty
vvMarlee Starliper captured gold and Chris Barrett earned bronze at last weekend's PIAA State Track and Field Championships. Overall, it was a good day for the four Northern H.S. athletes who qualified for states - and all are returning next season. With a strong last half-mile to break away from the pack, Starliper, a sophomore, won the Girls Class AAA 3200 Meter Run in 10:25.28. Not far off the state record of 10:21.06 set in 2010 by Sara Sargent,
Starliper ran well in the heat and humidity that had descended upon Shippensburg University.
vvOver in the Javelin Throw prelims, Barrett launched a 187-10 effort on his first throw that held up in the finals for third place in the Boys Class AAA event. A total of 24 athletes competed in the AAA Javelin which was won by Marc Minichello of Wyoming Area (198-00).
vvOn Friday, junior Michael Ginder cleared 14-0 in the Boys Class AAA Pole Vault but missed out on a medal as he placed 11th. In the field of 19, Payton Morris of East Pennsboro H.S. claimed the state title with a 16-00 effort.
