Members honored for decades of service to the community

____For providing refreshment in the dog days of August to Wellsville Carnival goers for more than 40 years, Bob and Pat Miller were honored by the Wellsville Fire Company.
The couple, who received recognition at the fire company’s recent annual banquet held at the Dillsburg VFW, has slowed down with the responsibility, but their children and grandchildren have continued the “family tradition.”
Miller, who served as past vice president and chairman of the board of trustees, and Ben Myers were honored for their 50 years of service to the fire company.
Myers served as president of the fire company from 1972 until 1990 and much progress was made during his tenure. Among those accomplishments were the construction of the current engine bay and the purchase and placement in service of one of northern York County’s first rescue trucks. The purchase or renovation of four other pieces of fire apparatus and a total renovation of the banquet facility and kitchens were completed under Myer’s tenure. While president, Myers was in charge of the annual carnival and, under his guidance, it grew into what has now become one of the largest three-day events in the area.

Starliper wins Relays Mile;
Barrett throws personal best

By Joe Guty

vvAfter a brisk 68-second first lap in the High School Girls Mile at last week's 124th edition of the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Marlee Starliper was in the lead pack, a field of 16 elite high school runners. The Northern sophomore ran patiently as the pace cooled off after the second lap and, into the third lap, with 600 meters to go, Starliper was comfortably in the lead. vvWith her smooth stride and familiarity with front running, she would not be challenged as she cruised to the finish line in 4:47.51 and first major win on a national scale. The original start of the race lasted about 75 meters as there was jostling and a runner fell down. Called back to the starting line for another attempt, Starliper flinched slightly and the starter had to re-start the race.
