Staff Reports

Torches light up the night sky as merrymakers celebrate the ancient custom of wassailing during First Friday, Jan. 5 at Dills Tavern.
The ancient custom of wassailing, or the blessing of the fruit trees, took place at Dills Tavern during First Friday, Jan. 5. Torches lit up the night sky as the merrymakers toasted and sang to the health of the trees in the hope that they will provide a bountiful harvest in autumn. In line with tradition, a reveler hung a piece of toast in the branches of one of the trees. A gun salute topped off the evening’s festivities.
In addition, a blacksmith was at work, a band performed in the tavern and the tasting room was open at the new Eichelberger Distillery.
The next First Friday is Feb. 2 with music by Forbes Road Frolic. Expect loads of fun with live music, snacks, tastings, BYOB, and more. The
Brigade of the American Revolution will present Colonial demonstrations.
The event is exclusive to the 21+ crowd and advanced ticket sales are not available. Cost is $10 for members and $15 for non-members at the door.

Franklin Township: Board approves new signage
Carolyn Hoffman/Staff Reporter
During the public comment section of the January 10 Franklin Township meeting, several Franklin Township businesses were worried that weight limits on some township roads would preclude them traveling those roads. However, supervisors assured them that the restrictions do not apply to local traffic or businesses.
Franklin isn't changing the roads' allowed weights, which were set in several ordinances between 1962 and 1992, only posting signs saying what the allowed weight limits are. The notice “local deliveries only” will also be added to the weight limit signs. The township roadmaster will post the signs.
The township is further cleaning up other existing regulations to comply with current laws and practices. Supervisors discovered that a 1966 ordinance about paying planning commission members was more restrictive than what is currently allowed by state law. So, supervisors agreed to advertise an amendment that is expected to be given final approval in February that puts the township in line with the current rules.
In response to a question asking if the Northern York County Fire & Rescue had the high-rise apparatus to potentially respond to a fire at any of the proposed warehouses in Carroll Township, they learned that the builder of a warehouse along Route 74 would make a one-time $400,000 donation to the fire service. The donation was termed a “drop in the bucket” as ordinary fire equipment now costs at least one million dollars and takes several years to arrive once ordered.
The final subdivision plan of the Game Commission and Warrington Farm Meats was approved. The subdivision is a minor land swap that adds some road frontage land to Warrington Farms. A conditional use hearing for L-Cubed on Range End Road was set for February 14, assuming all required materials and permits are in hand by then. Supervisors approved several waivers for the land development plan, including waiving the need for a preliminary plan as this development will occur on a single lot. Also approved was a waiver from building road curbs, as none exist on Range End Road.
