The annual Farmers Fair Queen pageant kicked off the 108th Farmers Fair on Monday evening in the Northern High School auditorium.

Opening remarks by fair president, Al Kauffman; Darrin Youker, a representative of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture; Mayor John Richardson; Pa. State Sen. Mike Regan and Pa. State Rep. Ten Northern High School ladies vied for the crown, as they displayed their character and talents for a panel of three judges and a sizable audience. Judges were JoEllen Thomas, a former 1982 queen, Alana Eisenhour Starner with Cedar Hills Farms, Wellsville and Rodney May, co-owner of Turkeyfoot Nursery.

Board passes preliminary budget

Mary Lou Bytof/Reporter

At its October 10 meeting, the Dillsburg Borough Council passed a preliminary budget for 2024. A copy will be on display at the borough office at 233 S. Chestnut St. for residents to read until the council meets on November 14. At that meeting, they will vote on the final budget.

The proposed 2024 budget shows a total income of $1,771,364.05. Its estimated total expenses are 1,768,782.14. With this balanced budget, there will be no need for any tax increase this coming year.

In comparing the proposed budget with the 2023 budget, there are some significant differences. The proposed budget shows $340,645 in intergovernmental revenue, whereas this year's budget indicated $823,950 in that category.

According to Borough Manager Laura Kauffman, part of that money for the current year came from government COVID funds which amounted to roughly $228,000.

The proposed budget shows more than a $9,000 increase in the interest, rent and royalties income. Much of the additional money resulted from the rent of the community hall in the new borough building.

A mental health professional will accompany Carroll Township police officers as they respond to calls involving individuals in crisis who may need a non-threatening individual to calm them and de-escaate a potentially violent situation, Carroll Township Police Chief Tom Wargo told the Dillsburg Borough Council last week.

As he introduced the York County Co-responder program to the council, the chief said that Carroll will share the co-responder with nearby Fairview and Newberry Townships. The co-responder program is paired with WellSpan Health, he said.

“It's a win-win situation,” Wargo told the council.
