Washington Township: Voluntary trash collection considered

Carolyn Hoffman/Staff Reporter

Washington Township is going to try something it's never done before. Supervisors agreed to have the solicitor prepare bids for voluntary trash collection.

The bids likely won't be ready until June. The move came after a resident complained about her trash bill going up 30% for the next year. In Washington, which currently doesn't have any trash collection, residents can contract with any hauler they wish for trash pickup.

Under the bidding process, trash collection would not be mandatory. However, if supervisors accept a bid from a trash hauler, any resident who wants trash collection for weekly trash pickup would need to use the chosen hauler. People who use large dumpsters could still, apparently, contract with anyone they wish.

Even if supervisors put trash collection out for bids, they would not need to accept a bid they didn't like.

Dillsburg Area Public Library: Serving the community since the summer of 1953

Chanty Webb/Staff Reporter

The Dillsburg Area Public Library got its start in the summer of 1953 when local physician Martha Logan Bailey welcomed the children of Dillsburg into her office for children's story hour. By the end of that same year, the Dillsburg Women's Club opened the Dillsburg Public Library in the town's Community Building. In 1965 the library incorporated as a non-profit and in 1974, it joined the library system. Several moves later, the library now resides in what appears to be its forever home at 204 Mumper Lane, remodeled just eight years ago.
