Eclipse captivates Dillsburg area

Curt Werner/Dillsburg Banner

Clouds create an ethereal glow as they pass over the eclipse at 3:25 p.m. Monday afternoon in downtown Dillsburg.

Whether they were at home, at work or at school, many Dills burg area residents took advantage of a rare opportunity to witness the partial (92-95%) solar eclipse on Monday afternoon.

The moon began its journey across the sun in the sky above the borough shortly before 2:00 p.m., it wasn't until 3:15-3:20 that the spectacle of the nearly occluded sun reached its peak.

Along Baltimore Street in the borough, people from homes and businesses on Dillsburg's main street came out with their special solar eclipse glasses or pinhole devices to view the event.

For those who forgot to purchase the special glasses before the big day, social media was ablaze with suggestions on how to safely view the event indirectly by using common household devices with round holes such as colanders, slotted spoons, a piece of cardboard with a pinhole, or even a Ritz cracker. To do this, the viewer stood with his back to the sun and hold the device on a plain surface, such as pavement, to see the various stages of the eclipse.

Carroll Township: Engineer reappointed

Kristen Stagg/Staff Reporter

At the Carroll Township Board of supervisors meeting on April 8, Gibson-Thomas Engineering firm's Philip Brath was reappointed as township engineer. A request for proposal had been issued earlier in the year, with multiple responses; however, Brath's firm and he were renamed unanimously to the position. Supervisor Kelly Wall, participating by Zoom, offered congratulations to Brath.

Later in the meeting, Brath brought up the meeting on April 11 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the rezoning of property along U.S. Rt. 15. During Northern Business Park warehouse conditional use hearings, registered objectors asked the board to consider rezoning the land to ensure their homes were protected in future. They reiterated their request after the condition use was withdrawn.

This year's DYB team roster includes six squads apiece in the Intermediate, Minors, Hybrid, and Coach Pitch divisions.
As the season progresses, we are looking forward to tracking scores and providing updates on your favorite DYB teams.
