‘Pawsabilities’ benefits Susquehanna Service Dogs

Story and photos by Carla Maddox

John, with his dog Jill, and Ben, with his dog Dexter, came all the way from Schuylkill County to participate in the Susquehanna Service Dogs program.

____
On March 10 and 11, Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD), a program of Keystone Children & Family Services, celebrated 16 years of providing service dogs to the community. “Pawsabilities,” the organization’s largest annual fundraiser, provides family activities that include Canine Olympic Games, demonstrations and vendors at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex.
____The SSD animals are trained to help with everyday tasks and spend their lives opening doors, picking up medication, finding glasses, carrying bags and helping children and adults with disabilities to become more independent and lead full, rich lives in the community. The canines are trained to support individuals with hearing loss, balance disorders, seizure disorders or autism, as well as those who are quadriplegic or have other physical and emotional challenges. These dogs truly earn the nickname of “man's best friend.”
____It takes two years and approximately $20,000 to raise and train each service dog, so “puppy raisers” are always in demand. SSD takes care of all veterinarian costs and provides direction on training to help the puppy grow to its fullest potential. Someone in need of a service dog is only asked to pay $5,000. Often, those individuals cannot afford the fee and that’s where benefit events like Pawsabilities help.

Franklin Twp. denies appeal
By Peggie Williams

____Franklin Township supervisors have upheld the validity of their zoning ordinance regarding steep slopes and denied Debra and Stephen Boyer’s curative amendment, which would allow them to build on 42.8 acres on the top of South Mountain above the Lerew Farm.
____For the past five years, the Boyers have tried to find a way around this ordinance, contending they bought the property prior to the passing of the zoning ordinance and they should be exempt.
____The supervisors’ decision came after a hearing that lasted more than 18 hours of testimony throughout six evenings. The Boyers now have the right to appeal the action in the York County Court of Appeals.

An Encore for Polar Bears?

Jon Mayer bunts during batting practice. Mayer is the catcher.

____From hunter to hunted. After a remarkable stretch run last year, the 2012 Northern High School baseball team returns as defending PIAA Class AAA state champions, as well as the defending Mid-Penn Colonial Division champions, third-place District III medalists and state titlists with a 23-5 record.
____All eyes will be on them – as well they should be.
____While Northern lost state tourney star and MVP Joe Tuschak to graduation (and to the New York Mets), along with Andrew Keirn and Dom Apicella, there are plenty of veteran ballplayers returning.
____Head Coach Brian Robison starts his sixth year at the helm with a 79-37 record at Northern and a 140-83 overall record that included five years at Bishop McDevitt.
____"We have to replace three quality seniors," said Robison. "However, nine current seniors who all contributed in some capacity last season will bring plenty of experience and leadership to the field. Our No. 1 goal is always to win the Colonial Division, advance into D III playoffs and hopefully the state playoffs. One game at a time."
